I am trying to get a zoom lens and can't decide between the 75-300 D ED lens and G. The difference is a lot (£250 and £90) so I want to know why. Is it because D lenses are better?

Also what is difference with AF and AF-S? Do the above lenses use similar to USM? Please explain

See my reply in this thread.

AF-S is very similar to Canon's USM, but a lot less Nikon lenses have that "feature".

Remember, you are buying into a lens system; see my replies in this recent thread and this older thread for my thoughts on the subject.

I got the 70-300 D lens, mainly because of what eddy suggested. It's a great lens, and if you shop around you should be able to get the D lens cheaper than 250 quid. I've heard the G lens has some distortion at maximum zoom.

some shots taken with 70-300 D. I can't show you any more, because they are related to current challenge, and I haven't uploaded them.

I agree as far as the lens sytem goes and I beleive that Canon is always the best option. But I do photos as ahobby so other than a kit 18-70 lens and later a zoom lens will do me just fine. I will never have or be prepared to pay a lot more for lenses. Maybe a flash unit soon who knows. Then I am happy. That's why I opted for the D70 even with all it's problems with moire, backfocus and only 200ISO over the 300D canon. That camera will be my last (that's what I said when I bought my diamge 7i though :)) Could you post me some images full resolution one at 70mm one at 300mm and one at say 150 or 200?

Full resolution in jpeg if you can. I have ADSL so bandwidth no prob. My email is gp@malakies.com thanks

Have you considered the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro II? I just got one from B&H Photo for about $210
This is a 100% crop from the Sigma and the Nikon kit lens at 70mm.
Some web site, that I can no longer find, had 100% crop from the Nikon 'G' and 'ED' lens as well as the Sigma. To me the Sigma won hands down and it also has a macro feature.

When you say a macro feature? I thought all lenses do macro. Fair enough to do better macro you need a dedicated macro lens but I was under the impression all lenses do macro. And by the way does bigger mm in a macro lens means you get a closer shot? Bigger magnification? eg a 100mm macro zooming in at an ant will it show the ant bigger than a 50mm macro lens? Is this how they work?

I'm not sure of the text book definition for a macro lens but the difference in this lens is the minimum focusing distance.
59.1in. in standard mode and 37.4in. in macro mode however macro mode can only be activated from 200mm to 300mm.

A good read from a very reputable source about these issues.
