Well it is apparent that it is an RGB display, whatever it is. There are definitely trios of LEDs in red green and blue.

It is an RGB Display, but it's not a jumbotron or a sports sign.
This is the exact same thing as before.

Newfangled floor/background for rock concerts |

Hmmm
No robots that I know of, but I can ask ops... they might have some stashed somewhere.
The pictures are about a 4"x6" section of a 1'x 1' piece of something much much larger.
It has been used for concerts, but it's not a floor or background.
It is used for advertising but not in a retail environment.
The company I work for patented the software used to control this.

Is it on a blimp? That's the only other place I could think of that would use a big sign like that. |

That's about as close as you can get Bear.
This square is a test piece off a 40 foot by 80 foot digital highway billboard. Notice the LCD display below it which is what we use in places like Airports and Bus stops. These boards are used by IHeart Radio during concerts, Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake have used them to release records across the world as well as hundreds of advertisers every day (typically an advertisement stays on the board 30-60 seconds at a time multiple times during the day. They're all connected so you can display the same thing on hundreds of boards in about 30 countries across the world all at the same time or every one can be completely different.
Those boards in Times Square are also ours, though a much older technology, I was very surprised to hear that for one of these boards most require only a 64k graphics file. For us to put a new one of these up we put in over half a million in hardware, and have to take down 7 regular billboards (in San Antonio, different cities have different rules). I work with the guys who wrote and maintain the software that controls all of this... It's one of the fun things we do :) |

Ha! Fun stuff. It is amazing how the outdoor communications industry is changing. It was not many years ago at all, in our area, that active displays started replacing the old static billboards, but the transition has happened *fast.*
ETA: It still amazes me, that as long as the humble LED has been around, the applications are just now really exploding. They are literally everywhere, and there are some applications such as residential lighting that are nearly untapped, but on the cusp of busting loose.

I DID Ask about the Robot nipples, and no one down there currently has any, but a couple said they'd go build me some. :)
Oh yeah, the signs in Times Square are actually more dense in lights than this one, though very similiar.

Alright, lemme dig something up... May be a little while, go have a drink and some snacks, start supper, play some backgammon, whatever floats your boat. I shall return. |
