I know that the current member rules allow for the use of layers. I also know that the final image is to come from one image, taken with a digital camera. But I would like to know if this is legal:

Can I layer the SAME image but in two different sizes, and then blend them so that both layers show, one more, one less? I don't want to post an example, as I might want to use it for the current challenge.

i think this is one of those "technically-legal-but-not-in-the-spirit-of-the-challenge" ideas. creating a "new element" is probably going to be frowned on, even though the "new element" is the image itself. i would submit something different, and add your "composite" to your portfolio and then post a link to it in the "current challenge" forum. ask for input that way.

I think that this would require adding elements where they did not exist in the original photo. (the little photo in the other layer) I think the SC talked about this, and it is in fact not legal.

Thank you, Heather and Owen. It wasn't that much of a picture anyway. I'm finding this "center" challenge frustrating - pictures are boring. This is the pict I was thinking of entering:

Thanks again.

I think I would bring the larger image forward so it is more noticable.
But nice!

edit: To moodville,

It does, eh? LOL. So ... you think I could have "cheated"? But then, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself (and I'm a hard person to live with) :))

The big halo is part of the second image, as is some of the "striping" in the candle itself.

Interesting. I thought of that also, but didn't like it - too much "in your face". Thanks for the input!

Ursula,

Try moving the camera back or forward towards the candle on a steady axis while you shoot (or zoom if your camera can do that while shooting). If you do it quickly, with a long exposure, and rest only at the two points, you can get this effect naturally. It will take many tries.

I've been experimenting with camera movement for the past two weeks. I have only posted one of those images here (see my abstract challenge). If you are on photopoints, I've loaded a few of my other images there, and you can view Andrew Chamber's work, who inspired me to start along those lines.

My Abstract Submission, done via camera movement, not PHOTOSHOP:

Here's a different kind of example, perhaps closer to what I am suggesting for you:

Neil, thank you! I'd forgotten about that technique. I love the colours in your photos.
