...and I would argue that a good percentage of people don't read the fine print on the majority of documents they sign.

That may be the case, but is it grounds for empathy for the "newbie"? Seems to me that when you're new and participating in something for the first time you'd slow down even more and definitely read something before you physically "select" the checkbox before continuing on.
As for the rest of the argument for reading the "fine print" ... reading three relatively short sentences (in non-legal mumbo jumbo) is not a fair comparison to an Adobe (or any software) license that is many times pages long. |

Empathy - I guess I can feel it for most anyone, newbie or not, who makes a mistake for the first time.
There's a lot to assimilate in a site like this. Some get it right away, some make a mistake or two.

There are certain things in life where this is definitely NOT true... :O)

This site has an intense amount of rules for a virtual ribbon with no money or other real compensation for the winners. Of course newbies get confused by this and don't realize how strict the site is. |

True, and I can see your point, especially when it comes to rulesets, etc... but all I'm talking about is that when you submit a photo for a challenge you need to select that checkbox that lays it out quite clearly (have your original available basically).
If someone blindly checks that box without reading / understanding it, and then gets a DQ for not having the original available, I have little sympathy for them. Sorry. |

Sympathy? yes.
Empathy? yes.
Cut them a break? no. |

I'm cynical enough to assume that when someone fails to submit a valid original within the acceptable time span, it's usually because they know they don't HAVE a valid original. |

Could it possibly be because their original is no longer valid as it was modified by transfer software? I'm pretty sure my first few entries originals might have been modified and thus not valid.
It wasn't until I read about this in the forums that I realised this can occur. I used to use my computer software to search for and download my images from the camera until I realised that the date on the properties of the image said it was taken and modified when it was downloaded and not when actually taken. I now shoot RAW & JPG and use a card reader to copy and paste the images into my computer. For Minimal challenges I then create a copy of this folder and play with those images and do not touch the original folder ensuring those JPGs have not been modified. |

That may well be. We don't have any way of knowing since SC don't specify. I'm assuming that at least SOME of these people just aren't submitting a proof file at all. I could be wrong of course. |

I virtually always bring my pictures onto my computer via my cameras and the computer program scanners and cameras. I haven't had a problem with validation.
