Fascinating. I've got to read up on those more...

It is an arthropod, not an insect. It is hatched looking exactly the same as when it dies, only much smaller - and these animals exhibit very rapid growth.

Jumping Bristletail? But that's not an arthropod...

Heck, insects ARE arthropods LOL.

I'm stumpified on this one... even an image-based search turned up dog squat. Literally. Given that it does not share its niche with fishes, and its rapid growth, and it being native to an arid region, I'd say this thing grows, lives and dies in ephemeral puddles or small catches of water.

That's the assumption I've been working on but I can't find it.

Yep.

Next hint: It's eggs (*usually) must dry out before they'll hatch. Sometimes more than one dessication event is required.

LOL.. Tadpole shrimp it is. Triops.

Well done.

I have three of them - and the mosquito story is that they were once considered as a method to combat mosquitoes, but they didn't work out.

As an aside, those hatched from this mud:

It was left in a container, dried out, rained on several times, and I noticed these fellas popping around... I immediately knew what they were, as I've been familiar with these since I found one in a waterhole as a kiddo running around the oilfield with my dad.. (god that's been.. SMH 20? years ago? wow..)
