Amazing deduction. The texture and copper chips must have been the giveaway clue. |
The shape was the first thing that lead me that way. |

I'd suggest getting a 4 year in chemistry before attempting that. |

After I posted it and saw the thumb, my exact thought was "aw crap, the shape is too obvious!"
It seems to stick out in the thumb, but in the full size image you get sucked in by the details.
ETA: The real problem is that you folks are just too damn good!

Ahh, sweet! (not the fish food of course)
I'm just about to hit the sack so if anyone has something in the staging area, post it up. |

It's some sort of immature marine arthropod... and it's NOT a horseshoe crab... Diastylis something-or-other? I'm rusty... |

Both of you are arguably correct.
Neither of you wins yet.
Hint: This is a local, native species that does not inhabit lakes or rivers. |

Hint: They are so awesomely delicious and defenseless that they can't live anywhere that there are fish present.
Hint#2: Very unusual reproduction cycle.

Nope. But there is a story of mosquito larvae and these that I'll relate once ya'll have nailed this.
And I find these little guy's reproduction cycle far more fascinating than that of the mosquito, despite the fact that it's somewhat less complex overall than the mosquito.
