Starter/ generator, probably on either a Briggs & Stratton, or a Kohler small motor. Generators generally have a fan pulley, but not the starter/generator types. |

It's a Delco-Remy 12V something or other, probably a generator, which would put out DC current as opposed to an alternator which puts out AC |

You would be correct. Now, for the extra point, the device serves a dual function in its application. What other function does the device serve?

Starter, since Delco-Remy is known for making starter/generators for tractors and the like.
As an aside, we're getting a digital microscope at work in a few weeks, which should make for some interesting Whatsit pics.

Aaaaaaand the extra point is..... GOOOOD!
ETA: For the gearheads, this is a starter-generator on a 1969 Allis Chalmers B212 garden tractor that, after 44 years in service, is still the machine I use for all my lawn mowing, roto-tilling, snow blowing, etc.
The starter/generator unit is, AFAIK, the original.

Baffle us Spork man. I have a lot going on and don't have anything interesting to post.
I have a couple of the D R starter/generators, which is how I knew. One of the ones I have is on a little I H 4 cylinder Cub Hi Boy tractor. and it still works too.
They are made in both rotations because some drive a pulley on the output shaft, and others drive a pulley at the flywheel end of the shaft on small motors. |

No, it's not used to fasten anything, but you're generally in the right area. |
