I chose to see the cup as half full NOT half empty. I know the vast majority of you feel the same way. It comes down to one's attitude. Would you be kind enough to share with us, and in particular, those of us that don't have the history at DPC that many of you have, a brief narrative on what has been one of the best experiences that you have gotten from DPC over the years?

It was nice and surprising to wake up one morning with my inbox filled with congratulatory messages about my one actual ribbon-winner, but perhaps the "best" experience was getting this comment in this thread, along with a couple of the comments on the photo itself.

It is the only photo I can think of that received a Posthumous Blue Ribbon and a DPC Brown Ribbon. It embodies the OOBIE as well as any photo I can think of... not by avoiding the challenge but by fulfilling it so perfectly that almost no one can see it.

Congratulations, General!!!

For me the best experiences have come from the outpouring of support whenever a fellow DPCer has to deal with a difficult issue, be it health, personal or financial difficulties.

There exist a myriad of examples where this community gathered round and provided solace and assistance to someone in need.

That for me is what I derive true satisfaction from and what makes me ever so glad that I am part of this wonderful family.

My favorite things about DPC are the iconoclasts and the surprising amount of support I get here.

This.

Plus I have a Kirbic here which can usually answer even my most unusual questions.

I'm with Ray/Cory and Posthumous both:

Certainly, the extended outpouring of support for Sherpet as her health and then her life slowly waned was extraordinary. I'll never forget that.

And the smaller community of oddballs that exist within, and are generally beloved of, this otherwise pretty conformist community is a big part of why I have stayed around as long as I have. Some might even say I'm one of them. I hope they do :-)

Of course, the two photo andventures in central California* hosted by Bear_Music were pretty extraordinary, but (to me) more of a personal highlight than a community-related one, as Ray was so thoughtful to bring up.

The collage we made for Dallas and some cards I designed for people promoting brain cancer awareness are two I've participated in myself.

My highlights from the nearly nine years I have been here (in no particular order) ---
- I've had a blast and met some great people at 7 DPC get-togethers
- Participated in at least 3 collaborative holiday projects with folks from all around the world
- Played in nearly 40 side challenges-- most of these are where I really sharpened both my photography and editing skills
- Have been both the donor and recipient of several gift memberships
- Acquired a fantastic virtual-godmother (Shez) for Riley
- Learned how to make 96% pure blue meth wait, no, that was from watching Breaking Bad. Nevermind.
- Watched more drama unfold here than all the cable TV channels combined
- Have seen countless acts of kindness and generosity by this community
- Gained a great many real-life friendships
- Observed and participated in some very lively political and religious discussions that I believe have contributed greatly to my understanding of both
- Learned nearly everything I know about photography from this community and took what was a sporadic hobby to an obsession

I'm sure I am forgetting some things, but I'll post 'em later if I remember them.

eta: ...oh yeah, I entered a few challenges and won a couple ribbons along the way, as well.

You forgot to mention me. My third surgery cost $28,000+. Through the family here an amount of $3,000 arrived at the hospital account from all over the world. From my fellow men in Korea an additional $2,800 was gifted. Just look at the Living With Cancer Thread and stand in awe at this family. Not to mention the camera I got from Deb when mine was 'affirmed/nationalized/mugged in South Africa. And blowing my own beugel, I have never been shy to give where and when I could. This is my family.
All I know and mastered, I learned here. This was in fact a school of excellence, not that long ago.

People have already mentioned many things that have been very special to me. The time with Sherpet was an incredible experience. The incredible emotional and financial support people have so freely given to friends in need.

To more simple things -- you can get any question answered here. There are so many people willing to take time to help you in any way. Just post a photo and ask for processing advice and people go wild. If they don't, bug them, and they eventually get around to it. :)

People will answer questions about software, hardware, bugs, colds, knee problems, allergies, learning disabilities, lighting and what's for dinner.

When I went home to MN for over 2 weeks while my mom was dying, I had someone that I'd never met, and never really even talked to on DPC, offer to lend me thousands of dollars worth of equipment because I didn't have a camera with me, and I was feeling lost, alone, and very scared. I didn't have the time to take him up on his offer, but the offer alone was such a comfort. Such a "feel good" moment during such a hard, sad time.

But one of the things that I've particularly enjoyed about DPC is that I've roped my family into it, and we've had some wonderful adventures that we never would have had without it.

My husband has been bathing in the James River with a floor lamp, we've gone out to the mountains and three of us did night time photography (with only one of us suffering mild hypothermia). We explored an abandonded civil war tunnel, fought over who was the next to get a chance to die during the film noir shoot, and had donuts at 4am. (3 years later, my son still asks occasionally when they'll do another 4am challenge. We had fun going out and exploring during the early hours of the morning -- just the two of us.)

The pictures that I've taken for DPC aren't just pictures -- but they're also memories of adventures over the years. Adventures that were created because of DPC.

Thanks for allowing us a peek into the past. To help us understand why this is not just another photo site. Why this site is a very special place.

Just another thought..

Peter Venter - docpjv - has shown all of us the true face of bravery and just what never giving up can do.

I feel that I'd have missed something important in life if I hadn't gotten to know him somewhat, and if I hadn't been privileged enough to be a part of that journey with him, so to speak.

Not really a part of DPC per se, but certainly now a part of my consciousness, and I've have never known the man were it not for this place.

I didn't "forget" to, LOL. Since you're still firmly amongst the living, I wasn't sure how you'd feel about being tagged as an exemplar so I passed on it :-)
