Ok, will give it a try. Thanks!

As for video...once again, a feature I never really used but if what you describe is the case, then it is something that will be a factor for you. I did have a video camera but sold it cause I never used it.

Well let us know how you like it. Frankly, I think it's a home run. So many features with tremendous clarity and sharpness.

I was just reading about the video on the D7100

"With full-time autofocus and manual exposure control during video recording, a built-in stereo microphone and an external stereo microphone jack, headphone and HDMI jacks, the D7100 achieves exceptional cinematic reproduction and quality. Record in several high-definition formats: 1080p at 60i/50i/30/25/24 fps or 720p at up to 60p for ultra-smooth slow-motion sequences. Dual SD card slots give you additional recording time, and an all new 60i function enables smooth playback on HDTVs or external monitors."

It says it has full time manual exposure control so I would think that you can change the aperture during recording. I have never used it so maybe I am out in left field!! That's where I usually am when it comes to this!! :-)

Hope that helps!

I've seen a lot of you tube videos on this N7100 including those that folks are video taping with. You can adjust the shutter speed while video recording but not the aperture. If you want to change aperture you need to purchase a lens that has the aperture adjustments right on the lens itself. Then you'll able to change aperture.

So, if I purchase this camera, I would probably buy a low cost 35mm or 50mm with an aperture ring and just use if for video.

I don't use the video on my d90 but I think I would like to if I upgrade to a d7100. I don't understand how shutter speed can be a factor when you are recording a video. Does the shutter not stay open? From what I have read it the iso changes as the aperature changes. I have a lot to learn about this!

Ooh, so excited, got the message on mt answering machine last night...but I made a promise to the D90, so better fulfill it, then carry out my evil plan this weekend *muwahahahaa*

On Nikon cameras you can't change the aperture during video recording, on Canon cameras you can. That's why I have 3 lenses with the aperture ring, so I can change the aperture whenever I want.

FWIW...I sent in a price match query to Henrys Nepean location and asked about matching Mostly Digital' price of $997.99. Here is their response:

Mostly Digital has a shipping and handling fee of $25.75. We would have to include that in order to price match. The total would be $1023.74, $1157.67 after taxes.

So wtf I'm just going to go get it.
09/25/2013 06:49:50 PM · #34
That still cheaper than the reg price at Henry's take the deal!!

Yeah I don't know what changing shutter speed would do either on a video. I don't know squat about video. I agree with the above comment. I'd just purchase a low cost nice 35 or 50mm lens with an aperture ring and use that.

SNAFFLES --

Glad to hear you're diving in and making the N7100 purchase. I think you're going to love this camera. Can't wait to hear how you like it. Good luck!

Thanks all, I can hardly wait! Planning on going into the big city tomorrow after work, hopefully before rush hour gets under way...fun fun fun...

Exactly the same of photography, depth of field ;)

Hi Alexkc,

I appreciate that changing the aperture on video reacts the same with as still photography with respect to depth of field. What I don't know is what does changing the shutter speed on video do. Does it change the exposure like with still photography?

SNAFFLES

You must be pumped! I'm gong to sound like a kid when I say this but I love going to the store or opening up my UPS box and getting a new camera.

I live in CT and have an hour and a half ride to B&H Photo in New York City (with no traffic). The excitement for me of going there and just breathing the air let alone walking out with a new camera is off the charts for me. My wife can tell you. It' better than going to a Red Sox game or even riding my Harley (alright the Harley is close).

So I'm excited for you and my research for my next camera purchase will continue. Now I'm even wondering if I'll wait to see what they replace the D300 with? I don't think the D7100 is considered to be the upgrade to that camera but don't get me wrong it's an awesome camera.

Yes, definitely. Sometimes it's better to change the aperture than changing the shutter speed because in certain conditions a different shutter speed can create a few problems.

And anyways, it's better to be able to have a double control over the camera settings than the possibility to change only the shutter speed (and the ISO value, of course)

OK, got it, thanks Alexkc.

So as much as I love the D7100, and I really do love this camera. I think I'm gong to hold out for a D300 upgrade/replacement. Reason being I plan to branch out and try my hand at bird photography. The buffer just doesn't clear quick enough when shooting RAW with the D7100. I don't want to wait forever but I figure I'll try and hang in through December and see the D300 upgrade comes out.

Hey Snaffles.........

Did you get your D7100? You in camera heaven now or what?

LOL well I did at least get to fondle my new baby today...but dumbass that I am, as I'm trading in the D90 to further offset the $$ of the D7100, I totally forgot that you have to return the charger and battery with it...and those were at home, an hour's drive away...

D'OH!!!!!!

So, rather than trek alllll the way back home, and allll the way back into town, I opted to call it quits and just sit in a holding pattern. Hey, Friday afternoon-rush traffic in any city is bad, and Ottawa is no exception.

But the store opens at 10am, so 9am tomorrow I am gonna be out of here like a frickin rocket. I have to be anyway, I gotta get back here for a consult.

Too funny Snaffles. That must have ticked you off. Oh well just think how much more fun it'll be tomorrow.

Yeah...it SUCKED!!!! And I was considering doing the drive to home and back but had just finished work too, so wasn't really feeling it. But at least I got a chance to see it.

Ok finally got the beast and battery grip and 2nd battery, charged up and shot outside for a bit. Initial reaction...wow oh wow. In-camera menus and buttons, dials etc are same basic layout as on the D90, but they've moved a couple buttons and added some more.

And new toys like can shoot in HDR. Lovin the 51 AF points, now have to learn how to control them!!! :-) So I definitely have some manual reading to do (and for once it actually looks like they put some thought into how it's organized), but of course more to the point just getting out and using it. Shouldn't be that big a learning curve *famous last words*

Looking forward to your sample pics Snaffles.

I like to put the camera on ground level especially when shooting down a set of railroad tracks. So I'm trying to find an articulating LCD screen that would plug into the shoe mount for shots like this.

If you know of any that are compatible let me know. BTW I still haven't bought the camera yet but trying to get my ducks in a row.

I have a tripod that goes flat to the ground, of course with the battery grip and ballhead and the lens is actually closer to 5 inches. Still close enough, if I really do need it on the ground I try to rig up something with a Gorillapod and a beanbag :-)
