You've inspired me. I bought a 1970 VW van, and am in the process of turning it into a giant GoPro by switching out the headlights for lenses... |

I'd like to see a pinhole image as well. I may have missed it, but what is the distance from your flange to the sensor? |
A pinhole would be interesting, but I can't imagine the light loss and subsequent noise. F/5.6 seems really dark.

You KNOW I'd love to come out and play with it. Of course, transporting you is easier isn't it? ;) (Consider it an open invite)..
Distance from flange to sensor is completely variable, but I've locked the camera and intermediary plane to a constant distance of about 1/2 a meter.
Today, with the 600mm, focusing on a headshot distance shot, I found it necessary to extend the flange to film plane distance to something like four and a half feet. Giving me a total length at that point of just under seven feet. |

It's called "racking out", Cory, as in "I had to rack 'er out to 4 feet and change today." |

You warned me about this months ago, but damn, this is addictive, and expensive. Every little bit costs at least $100...
Fricken drillbit I needed yesterday was nearly $100... (6 inch circle borer) |

Or, perhaps, if that doesn't enlighten a person, pondering the grain in the full size version of this image will do the trick.. ;)

-1600 pixels
Busy night... So tired of lugging this thing around... Going to get it out tomorrow for a while too though...
And, something a bit more traditional looking..

Today was a good day.
I think I like the 600mm better than the 300mm...
Be sure to view each of these at full size, the resize didn't really do them a hell of a lot of good.

I prefer the monochrome versions. They have something, that "je ne sais quoi"... really film-noir. |

Hey Cory, Can you hack a scanner and use it as a sensor for this thing? It might get some unique shots if you can do it. That lens should have the coverage circle.
Love that old glass. I collect B&L, but have not had time to rig much of it to shoot. You saw the hacked 120mm f1.8 movie projector lens on the Fuji S3 at SoBe.

I've got the scanner already. :) Never really have cared for scanner cams though, and my DLSR really gives me some wicked DR to work with, so I'm lacking motivation.
Starting to think through the real deal build on this... Wish you were here instead of there man.
Yeah, in fact, that old projector lens was one of my inspirations for this contraption.
I'm actively seeking out lenses now, but they're getting kinda scarce, and I'm late to the darn game... (Plus, I get the feeling fast 600+mm lenses aren't exactly common anyway..)
Here's my dream lens right now... Wish I had a bit of spare change laying around. |

Well, at least you'll see a return out of yours. I'm not betting on making any money with my drillbit.
And sadly, it isn't large enough for that 900mm f/4 lens I want. |

With a little care, a $20 hand jig saw, and a good file or rasp, you can mark at 5.75" and at 6", then carefully saw the hole on the inner line, and file it the rest of the way to the finished size line.
Another big hole option but a little sloppier is to drill a ring of holes with a small bit, compared to the diameter of the finished hole, then file the rough cutout to finished size.
Third option, a thumbtack in the center, a piece of string, and a planet smoking light saber.
If you want to go ahead and get the lens, I can help out with the $17 shipping, but must warn you that it looks like it may not be autofocus or IS. |
