Extremely unprofessional.

(I mean that stupid religious guy, not the photographers)

I think a photographer has no business whatsoever standing right in the center background of the ceremony where everyone can't help but see him doing his work. I think the minister wouldn't have had to BE a jerk if the photographer had just up-and-moved the instant it became an issue. I think if the photographer was there because the bride and groom asked him to be, then he should have told them it was not a good idea. That's what I think, pretty much :-)

Perhaps. But, no matter WHAT the photographer was up to, that pissy little tantrum was super out of line. And it wasn't like he took a reasonable tone, from the start he was being pissy and whiney about it.

Honestly, I'd have invited him to walk off and leave the ceremony to me. (surprise! I'm a registered minister, and I'll take it from here)

You mean, he SUDDENLY realized, in the middle of the ceremony, that there was a photographer behind him...?

I think all of them were out of line. They probably should have had a meeting of the minds on where to stand before the ceremony started. But, I really thought that minister was the worst. Threatening to stop the ceremony (news flash - he did stop it with his little tantrum) was totally unprofessional.

I'd say it just goes to show that one of the key things to do when photographing a wedding is to have a quick word with the minister/vicar/registrar etc, beforehand and get an idea of any restrictions. That's what i've always tried to do. Maybe you can push those restrictions a little but not too much. I had a wedding a couple of weeks ago and the registrar was quite strict. It was a very small room and he said i could only really be in the corner to his right (which is the opposite to where i would normally want myself). He said that if i came too close to him during the ceremony he would just stop. There wasn't much i could do - i was kind of squashed between the bridesmaids and a guy in a wheelchair. Didn't get any good shots really but i made sure i mentioned this to the couple later and they were fine about it. Also, it's one of the reasons that i got the Olympus OMD - because it's a silent little thing just right for tiny rooms. I think that if he had a silent camera he might have gotten away with it. It's the shutter noise that is top of the list of annoyance for ceremony dudes.

Saying all that though, i've found most of these people are fine, if a little officious (which is kind of the point).

We have ONE photograph of our wedding ceremony. The minister expressly forbid it in the church. Our hired photographer snuck up to the balcony and took one shot.

With two daughters coming of marrying age, this is a good thing to keep in the back of my mind. Work out with the officiant beforehand where the photographer can go. But, yeah, I think this guy over-reacted from the start and the photographer should have just moved when asked to. Now, the biggest memory of that poor couple's wedding day is the minister and photographer arguing in the middle of the ceremony.

So I'm watching this video with Pandora (which I have forgotten about) playing in the background. It starts playing an ad for "fast acting advil" because "you never know when a headache will strike).

It fit remarkably well

That is just ridiculous. I'd have heard that and asked every damned guest to bring the biggest loudest camera they have, and keep it hidden until "I do", then make the place erupt in photographs.

Ha! I didn't know that. It's done remarkably well.
