I think I like the original the best. While the seond crop does focus the action, it leaves a lot of negative space. |

Wow, big difference to me. I had given the original shot a 3 and let me explain why. It was unclear overall to me what the shot was about despite the title. The bird on the right was very distracting and the overall composition seemed unbalanced. It really did not appeal to me on an overall level. If I had time to go back and reasses the shot I would have probably raised the score to a 5 at the most.
As for the second shot, my first instinct was an 8! Cropping out the bird on the right and leaving the negative space on the left really makes this shot pop more to me. And the bird looks like he might be ready to swoop in and try to take the lucky bird's catch, not really noticable in the first shot.

I think the first is the better image. The third bird add some mystery and humor too. It's like he's a day late and a dollar short compared with the bird above the bird with the fish.
The second crop - with so much space on the left - seems to be real crowded on its right side.
BTW - the tail feathers on the upper bird are super fantastic.

Thanks for the comments. I like both pictures but for different reasons, depending on what effect I want to emphasize. This seems to be reflected by the comments. Pretty amazing how a different can completely change the message! I love photography!!!! :o)
