I wish I had it! Reviews I've read say it's an excellent lense and quite unique. It is also US$5000...I can keep dreaming...

i am probably dreaming for some time to come too, but I would like a good bird lens and the 400 is a lil shy, and the 500-600 canons are 2x the price of this one, plus this has extra reach
---hmm anyone have it dadas maybe? you own every lens made dont you?

Actually with the 1.6x crop factor of the Rebel a 400mm is pretty good for birds, I shot the bird below with a Canon 300mm f/4L IS with a Canon 1.4x II Teleconverter. I should have opened the lens wide to get a more blurry background but the bird is pretty much sharp.

I actually find 400mm to be quite nice for birds.
Here are some bird shots I took this past weekend.
This set was with the EF 400mm f/5.6L

Here are a few I took yesterday with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS lens:

And here are some I took a week or so ago at the beach with the 100-400mm IS lens:

I have been very happy with 400mm for birds. The Sigma 300-800mm EX is probably a very sharp lens but it is very big and heavy and no IS :( I personally don't care for carrying tripods around so I don't plan to go for this otherwise good Sigma.

greg, those pics are awesome. and just to prove I viewed them all, I spotted the odd one out! am sure it can't fly ;)

| those are,again, phenomenal! I agree the 100-400 is good for birds if you can get fairly close to them this weekend I was just a little to far away to a pair of herons fighting I used that lens and a 2x converter and they just turned out yucky, i was so disappointed. I knew they could of been awesome. |

I just got the 400mm "prime" and it is phenomenal...the sharpness is remarkable...the 400 is a good buy compared to the 5000 500-800, the 400 being 700.
Edit: I said 500-8000..(EIGHT THOUSAND)...now that got me thinking... : )

I took these shots with a 70-300mm lens... Not quite 400mm, but you can still get pretty close.
