**yeah, I'm still dealing with this! :/

I think the Fedex website was wrong or did not ask enough info before showing a $50 cost. I went to the Fedex drop off and they quoted me $189. Greyhound looks like the cheapest option - around $60, but from bus station to bus station. I started to post on UShip (I remembered them from "Shipping Wars"), but I just thought nobody in their right mind would take that big of a box across the country for $100 or less. |
The FedEx difference is wholesale vs. retail. Find someone with a Fedex account and ask them to get a quote. We ship much bigger (oversized) boxes to anyplace in the continental US for $95. And, I don't think your box is "oversized". But, then, what do I know. |
I have a client who does tens of thousands of dollars in shipping each year with Fedex. He allowed me to use his account number and he looked up his rate:
It is 36lbs, but... "They charge it as a 146 lb package because of the “dimensional” weight."Rate type: Net

Richard, if you want to check rates with your FedEx account, I'd be interested to see if you get something different.
