Right back 'atcha! Time to roast a batch right now, as a matter of fact...

Try the Sumatra Pak Lintong Joner. I roasted a pound of it and let it set a week....Delicious!!

Well, technically, it's irradiated, not radioactive, and it's not food. ;)

LOL...okay, I confess. I cook every night for them. One of the great sacrifices of parenthood...*pout*

Kinda handy to have your kids glow in the dark so you don't lose them on dark nights or get them run over on country roads... They also give reading on geiger counters so you have an edge at hide and seek... Then there's the photographic possibilities...

All the time saved not having to develop film, has been put to use in roasting coffee? Nice.

They make Peets in K-cups now, so thats pretty damned good.

Out of curiosity, if someone had the inclination to roast very small batches of their own beans, where would one procure the best quality un roasted beans?

Well, I do both. And I print pictures in my darkroom too. And, yes, our basement smells funny.

So glad you asked! Check out Sweet Maria's. I purchase the eight pound sampler. All it takes is a popcorn popper, a well ventilated area, and about five to ten minutes of time.

Or a darker roast of 12-14 minutes! I like the 8 pound sampler too! ;-)

Why in the world are we talking about coffee? Jeesh, you guys!! You're pulling the thread so waaaayayy off topic!! We're supposed to be talking about photography being all sizzle no steak, here.

So, please, let's get back on topic.

I don't really grill steaks that often, because they're pricey, and I'm partial to tenderloin. Which is ridiculously expensive.

If I want to grill a good piece of steak with some mushrooms, and I don't spring for tenderiloin, what cut should I get?

I will never feel guilty about hijacking a thread again.

Flank steak, if you marinade the hell out of it, with a teriyaki or soy based marinade, has some of the best bang for the buck.

Recently I sliced london broil thin and marinaded it for jerky, decided a few weeks later not too make jerky, thawed and grilled it, and it went about as fast as anyhting I have grilled, the kids, not always partial to steak, loved it.

Another fantastic thing to grill is boneless beef short rib.

I like ribeye and sirloin -- sometimes New York strip. Best steaks I ever made were in a cast iron skillet on the stove. Season with salt and pepper, sear a couple minutes on both sides, finish off in a preheated oven if well done is required.

marinating is good. if you drink enough coffee you can marinate longer.

Well, technically, it's irradiated, not radioactive, and it's not food. ;)

"Irradiated" isn't exactly the usual term (though perhaps technically accurate); that term is most commonly used to denote exposure to high-energy, high-frequency radiation (e.g. gamma rays, xrays), not the (much) lower frequency radio waves used in microwave ovens and radar. Microwaves are also emanating from all those little boxes over store entrances which open the doors as you get close.

Not that microwaves can't cause damage by denaturing proteins (read Robert Heinlein's story Waldo for a startlingly accurate prediction of the today's concerns), but there is no residual radioactivity or intracellular damage which could lead to genetic effects or cancer.

New York broiled with garlic and Hoisin and a lovely bottle of Groth.

I don't know how to cook mushrooms...please see Puppy Bear!

For images of mushrooms please see GeneralE!

P.S. Paul, I did read your article at the beginning ot the thread. Thanks for posting!

Speaking of broiled, what is the preferred way to broil peanuts? Excuse me, boil peanuts!

Never mind. I have no steak in this thread!

Most folks seem to prefer water and heat.

I like to grill skirt steak. It grills rapidly and it's very flavorful. Let it sit after grilling to redistribute the juices, then cut thinly on the bias. I toss mushrooms in a little olive oil, salt, and pepper and grill them alongside. I'm partial to big shiitakes for this, or portobellas.

Sounds good. My only addition would be that steaks are best grilled over the coals from a fire made from freshly split mesquite logs. Super hot, and delicious smoke.

Interestingly, the only pictures of edible mushrooms I've posted were intended to look radioactive ... :-)

No butter on the mushrooms?? It may be healthier, but what a crying shame!

Actually, up at Northern Minnesota, at the Chocolate Mousse, the served a rosemary butter, or a sundried tomato butter, or a truffle butter, or some type of butter in a ball on the steak. That also clogged your arteries, but was incredibly divine.
