So, my wife sold a large item on ebay and got a great price for it ($175 for an item we couldn't get $50 at a garage sale for), however, she forgot to specify local pickup only so someone in New Jersey bought it. My wife did not know how much shipping would cost and I just checked and it is going to cost $215 to ship UPS Ground. The package is 24"x24"x42" and is about 35lbs.
Does anyone know of a cheap shipping alternative? If she can't ship it for under $100, she'll have to rescind the sale. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. |

Have you checked the post office rates? sometimes they're actually cheaper... (I tried to look it up for you, but it needs an address)
You could try checking with a moving company and see if anyone's already going out there? |

Try the bus lines if they still do shipping. Used to be real cheap. |

Ken's bus line suggestion is probably the only "commercial" way to get it done that cheaply. It's too big for USPS, and UPS and FedEx are going to be very expensive as you've found. Other than the bus lines, I'm drawing a blank. |

Craigslist for people moving cars etc. Find someone going that way and offer them gas money to drop 'er off... |

You might also check with Amtrak -- rail is traditionally one of the least expensive freight options. |

Good idea - it's run by the government, so they're used to goal is losing money. :) |

Our guess from here in Colorado. It's not oversized. Is it overweight? (that would be a lot, like an iron statue.) Our FedEx wholesale account would be a charge of about $48 from Seattle to NJ. If you don't have a FedEx account, try to find someone local who does. |

You would think but I catch the train a bit to NYC on business and I would CERTAINLY not do it if I was paying :-/ It's just over 7 times the cost of a bus to the same place (bus drops off 200 yards from train station).
I have used buses a lot in the past for moving things around but not sure if that's all taboo now days because of "security" or some similar excuse. |

Ok -- I'm really behind in things... Have you heard of the Chinese bus services? My husband says check them out, much cheaper than greyhound. They'd have to meet it at the bus. He doesn't know if they do it or not.

Know any truckies personally? It used to be a great way to cart (what seems to me to be) a smallish sized carton for me. I used to send and receive stuff over 1000kms - the truckie would just put in it the sleeper and it never existed. :) |

Bingo! "Fedex Home Delivery" looks like it's around $50 (non-wholesale even). I guess I just assumed Fedex would be more expensive than any others. Doh! Thanks Richard - much appreciated. |

It may seem low, but you still got a really good shot at ribboning in the "Shipping a large box across the country" challenge, Tiberius. ;-) |

I would call a freight broker.
It's expensive if you have them pick up and deliver to a residential address, but if you ship terminal to terminal, the cost might be more reasonable. You'll have to deliver your box to the freight terminal and they'll have to pick it up at one. |

Although it looks like Ken's issue is solved. I have personally used uship dot com to ship large and odd sized stuff in the past.
Not associated... Yada yada yada. Just leaving it here for reference if someone else might need it. |

So, Ken, what did you decide to do? |

Thanks Alex - actually my issue - or my wife's issue, rather - is not resolved. I think the Fedex website was wrong or did not ask enough info before showing a $50 cost. I went to the Fedex drop off and they quoted me $189. Greyhound looks like the cheapest option - around $60, but from bus station to bus station. I started to post on UShip (I remembered them from "Shipping Wars"), but I just thought nobody in their right mind would take that big of a box across the country for $100 or less. |

If Greyhound is available in both cities, it likely is. We don't have a terminal where we live now. When we lived in Sacramento, I bought a bicycle built for two, and shipping was crazy low on Greyhound. Had to go pick it up, but the savings made it worth it. I've seen Greyhound ship an article as big as a motorcycle. Was a Honda 450, but still a whole freaking motorcycle. Was years ago, but they did it. |

The FedEx difference is wholesale vs. retail. Find someone with a Fedex account and ask them to get a quote. We ship much bigger (oversized) boxes to anyplace in the continental US for $95. And, I don't think your box is "oversized". But, then, what do I know.
