I am confused as h@ll. I rarely receive any constructive feedback and I am not sure what anyone is looking for. My original is the red guitar

These are my outtakes.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. I am wanting to take photography more seriously and would like some constructive feedback. I like what I am taking photos of but I do not like the scores for sure. The participants scored me the lower on average than non participants. The two commenters (happen to both be positive) gave me a 7.00. Someone help me please.

One that I futzed with for a while to see if I could fix the angle but ultimately gave up. Loved it for the potential - still tells a story but needed time and better care in setting up the shot rather than a fast capture as we drove by.

Hi CNovak,

I'll give you my two cents but understand I'm new here and I struggle with the challenges too. So take my comments with a grain of salt.

I think the concept, lighting and framing of this shot were excellent. For me, anyways, what I think may have hurt you was the HDR type of look or the post processing that you did. I've found you have to be fairly careful with that. If it's overly done folks just don't seem to respond as well.

The pictures in your portfolio are gorgeous. Like myself and most of us here you've got to develop thick skin. However, I can tell you that DPChallenge will and is making me a better photographer. Sometimes what I think is a hit others also like. Many times what I think is a hit doesn't move anyone else.

What I've learned is that I'm way too vested in my shots. I'm totally biased. My view is very slanted. Having the scores and comments from the folks here is soooo very helpful. It has gotten me outside of myself and in the "real world" where the masses prevail.

As a result I'm trying hard to pick up my game. Only good can come from that. So, like myself, keep plugging, tweak your work and you'll hit it out of the park before you know it. Good luck.

Jay

Hello Jay - congrats on your new PB and 6th place in the Red IV challenge!

Oops! I should have said at the beginning that was not complaining about the score in my chosen entry into the Red challenge...it did better than I expected. I posted it above the outtake simply to show comparision/contrast - what I choose over my outtake. I will be sure to be more clear about my postings in the future.

No worries about giving your two cents though - I think you have a valid opinion/point - not everyone will like how things are taken or Post Processed. It is interesting to see and/or hear other critiques on one's work. Thank you for the critique and the compliment on my work in my portfolio:-)

What I'm beating myself up for was the missed opportunity to take a better shot of that outtake with the boxing gloves. Though I realize I probably I would not have gotten the great still capture of the rain slanting had we stopped the car to take the shot.

Hey Jay,

Being new to the site, the Outtakes threads are probably new to you. It's simply a 20/20 hindsight-type thread that occurs after every challenge. People post other versions or renditions that didn't make the challenge because you can only enter one. Sometimes it is to gripe, but mostly it's about getting a bit of feedback or even validation ("You chose the right one").

I read Chrystyne's comments and think she has given you some very good direction. I did not like the processing on your entry - it seemed overdone for no reason. That said, I didn't like the processing on my own entry much, either LOL

Hi CNovak and Bohemka,

Thanks for your kind remarks CNovak. Well now I get how the outtake thread works. You could have been spared the pep talk (sorry just been there - felt like that), but folks have the need to gripe. If you receive some constructive criticism along the way all the better I guess.

I never thought joining a photography website that I'd have so much to learn about etiquette and how things work but that's cool, it's worth the "break in" period. I really like it here. I'll figure it all out soon enough. Bear with me.

Entry

I had this in to begin with.

Maybe I should have gone with one of these?

The tones on black are really nice, but for whatever reason the processing on them just looks rough.

The ones on white are, imo, much better processed. The one with hard shadows might be a touch overcooked, but I like both of the white ones.

I think the big difference is that the dark ones (shot indoors in low light) have a high iso and don't have the necessary clarity to begin with. I liked the tones but should gave abandoned them because of their failings.
The ones on the white background were shot in sunlight on my veranda. One day I'll learn to do lighting :-)
