It's the first time I have submitted a photo with hard lines (architecture) for a challenge and while the original image looks great (to me), any resizing I do makes it look over-processed and jaggy-edged. I tried resizing a totally untouched original, I treid various DPI resolutions, everything I could think of. Any suggestions? I am assuming that this will really be scored low by people for that reason alone. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Assuming that you work with Photoshop, not all jagged edges can be saved but downsampling by 5% step can help with that just as it can help to keep definition when upsampling. BUT, there IS a dowside to downsampling by 5% steps. Your picture will have less jagged edge but still she will look like it's over sharpenned. The only way I found to resizing (both upsampling and downsampling) and keeping the photography is natural look is using Genuine Fractals.
Genuine Fractals
Edit for typo

does genuine fractals really work? it says you can enlarge to 600%. does that mean you can really print a poster from a 5 megapixel camera? how effective is it?

Thank you! Anyone's advice whether to keep my entry with this detraction or not? I really like the photo otherwise. I was very unhappy with my lack of good material until this one. It's been a hard challenge -- the old lack of creativity!

It work, I can't swear for the 600% because I didn't try it but I was able to double the lenght of each size (that is 400%) and that way creating a 20MP out of a 5MP camera. Since then, pretty much all of my photo have been approved for 20x30 or at least 16x24 on DPCPrints while with Bicubic SI (the 5% method) I was only approved for 10x15.

Genuine Fractals sounds pretty good. Is anybody using this software with Photoshop Elements on a Mac? I was also wondering if there are any other suggestions before I buy? Thanks for your help in advance. |

Wow, you replied to a 6-month old post...
As the saying goes, "there is no such thing as a free lunch". Genuine Fractals cannot create details that aren't there (and neither can any other upsizing algorithm). There is no way to take a 2MP image and make it have detail present in a 6MP image (unless you are watching TV or a movie, in which case there exists a magical ability to take crappy, sub-VHS-quality security camera footage, zoom in 1000%, find a reflection in somebody's eye, and extract a perfectly clear view of the entire room =) GF is simply one of many "image interpolation" algorithms that attempts to enlarge images.
For a comparison of some interpolation algorithms (including GF), check out this link. You'll see that the differences between the various up-rez'ing algorithms are quite subtle.
