Anyone ever felt like selling there equipment and taking up say like collecting stamps or some other hobby? I am about to do the former. I have typed several times in here but I delete it then go back to mind my own business. Only to come back type something completely different then delete it then go back to looking at the sun with a magnifying glass. First of all I must say I love DPC it has taught me to photograph. Not just to shoot pictures but shoot something you like. How to edit things to a certain degree (still learning but doesn't matter now).

When I first came here I knew nothing. I didn't know what a sharp image was what a composed image was. So on and so forth. I learned because great people took the time to leave comments and also share how they did things with one another. It was gratefully helpful. I joined the Critique club so I could also help understand what a good photo was too and try and explain to someone else what I thought about there image. I don't make a lot of comments only something like 500 since I have been here so I for one shouldn't be complaining about the lack of comments in challenges but it seems if you don't have a great image you get nothing. Or worse you get "great" "nice" "horrible" and other stuff that doesn't really help you progress as an artist (I don't consider myself one).

I don't mind getting low scoring images in challenges I think I am giving out an avg. 5.4 and receiving an avg. of 5.6 something like that last time I checked. Low scores come with the territory and all part of it. Everyone can't be a winner there has to be a "loser" for lack of a better term. I am just really frustrated with the community as a whole or what's left of it. Something just seems broken with DPC. I can't explain it but because I really don't know what's broken (if anything maybe just me.)

I really don't have a point and pretty much rambling at this point. I just wish DPC was like I remember it.......maybe you get what you want out of DPC or as much as you put into it. I have lots of free time and I spend pretty much 24/7 thinking of the challenges are shooting for them. Maybe I should pick and choose what I enter more selectively and I would get better results. I don't know. About ready to categorize my stuff and put it on the buy and sell forum. I still have a passion for shooting I don't think I ever will let that go it's one of the only things I can still do. I check this site all too much...not just for scores but to see what's going on. I don't reply often to threads even though I have lots to say I just keep it inside. I think I am going to stay away from DPC for a while and see what happens.

DPC has had less participation in the last few months (year?), both from members and owner.

I would suggest leaving DPC before selling your equipment! Give it time to realize that one does not depend on the other.

True.

There's more to photography than DPC. If you've run out of inspiration for entering challenges, start shooting for some other reason, like the pure joy of it.

Post your pics on other sites, competition or just for showing. 500px, 1x, even FaceBook.

Everything changes and evolves over time. DPC is not the same as it was a few years ago and will not be the same as it now in the future.

DPC and Photography are not mutually exclusive.

I agree with the others, but...

All this pace needs is a gentle nudge. It's summer (where most are, at least), folks are busy, time is short. Commenting will drop. Just start a thread and ask for comments and you'll get them.

DPC may be clunking along at the moment, but you'll get what you want out of it if you massage it the right way.

I think you made your point right here.

What's "missing" (IMO) is a positive feeling that people are here to help you become "better" and to offer helpful suggestions. Voting has gone down somewhat, while I'm sure overall picture quality has gone up. Comments (other than "congratulations!") are almost non-existant, partly because some many were rebuffed, not always deservedly.

What to do? Start doing the things which are missing ... vote with a positive outlook (ask youself if the "average picture" here is really "below average" as your 5.4 score-given indicates), and start leaving some helpful and/or appreciative comments. If someone comments on your entry, send them a thank-you note and encourage them to do more.

If you like your entry, it doesn't really matter what the average voter thinks -- I find that if a photo really "reaches" just one person it's worthwhile and a "good" photo.

PS: Remember to go to your Preferences Page and turn off display of the Rant Forum for instant relief.

All perfectly valid sentiments.

If you ever feel like taking a cruise south to Socorro, and going out for a shoot, just drop me a line - I had a blast the last time we did a GTG.
