Nice article on a project to photograph portraits of people from Portland. Lots of nice portraits included.
Portraitlandia confirms and refutes everything you think about Portland |

very interesting. That really can't be a true sampling of the type of resident though, can it? Seems a bit like portraits of a travelling circus... |

Have you been to Portland?
I've not yet made it, but the exported samples with whom I have been acquainted do seem to support the idea that Portland is actually a giant circus.

You are correct. The article says he was attracted to the "funky culture" so there's going to be some bias. But I would probably say that it's easier to find this sort in Portland than it is in many other places in the country. If you took a walk around downtown you'd bump into such characters more than a few times. |

While a few of those are extreme, most look fairly typical of Portland. The "beard champion" furry guy is the only one that I would think looks out of place.
I think it's funny that you can throw John McAfee in there and he actually looks like the most normal one listed.
I'm bummed that they forgot my photo in the list of portraits.

Have to agree with DrAchoo that the portraits aren't a true sampling.
I think the norm is more average joes type of folks. However, the more interesting (as in "Keep Portland Weird" motto) crowd are easier to find in certain neighborhoods (Old Town, Hawthorne Dist, Alberta corridor, to name a few). |
