Hi everyone,
Just wondering - if you were on a tight budget, but decided to splurge $100 on your photography - what would you spend it on?
For instance, would it be an upgrade in processing software (for me it would be Photoshop Elements which I think you can get under $100), a new lens, a larger memory card, or maybe simply promotion, such as business cards? I would love to hear some opinions on what you think would be the best investment would be.
(thanks in advance for any responses - have to go out for the day!

Actually, I did just get a tripod as a gift that I probably would not have bought myself and I do love it cause it has made a big difference in my photos :) I guess that's what got me thinking about investing on something else. |

You might consider a Wacom tablet; that usually comes bundled with Elements and Painter.
A card reader if you don't have one, and a second memory card if you don't have one. |

That's sure a difficult question, depending so much on what you already have.
But here's a tip - while deciding, don't focus on just the hardware - think about things such as self improvement topics too - such as photo classes, seminars, workshoots, or good photo books.
On the hardware side - think about some of the less obvious such as filters (polarizer, graduated ND), extention tubes or screw on close up filters (if you like macro), perhaps an extra camera battery.
Good luck. |

I'd either get a new Velocity Sling bag Pro or a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8.

Thanks for all the great ideas so far! To make it easier, this is what I have so far:
- editing software that came with the computer
- a card reader
- two 64MB cards
- tripod
- the Nikon 4500 as it came with no extras (like lens, filters, etc.)
- two batteries
I originally spent all my money on the camera itself, but feel I need more than that now.
Thanks again, have to go out now but will definately check back as soon I get in tonight!

I'm partial to Bryan Petersen's books. You have a good basic kit. Maybe a couple of books and a new bag?

BJ, I have an extra, unopened, copy of PhotoShop Elements 2.0, if you're interested. If you send me a PM with an address, I'd be happy to place it in the mail for you - no charge. ...It seems whenever I buy a new scanner or printer it comes with free software - just happens that I have a couple of copies of Elements.
Now, to your topic: I'd spend my $100 on more compact flash memory for my 10D. They keep coming down in price, and I should be able to pick up 512mb for $100.

I'd invest in a tank full of gas and sandwiches to spend a day and a night in the high country.

id spend it on frames. You can have the nicest prints, and make them even nicer, if you get a mat cutter, and make your own mats and such. look at john setzler, he mats and frames his stuff really really really well.

The Nikon filter set is nice (UV, polarizer, ND4, ND8) - ($40 to $50)
or save up another $50 and get the crystalview 8x32 monocular - //www.ckcpower.com/crystalvue.htm ($150)

If you don't have a filter set (I guess Nikon makes one for that tiny thread on the 4500) then that's the route I'd go. Polarizer and ND filters will make a huge difference in what you're able to do with the camera. |

if you dont' have a filter set, that's a good way to go. it depends really on what you do with your camera. right now if i had 100 to spend i'd get an upgrade to my flash :)

Check out the Sunpak 144.
At this moment I'd like some ND filters and slave flashes (light triggered).

I guess that really depends on what you have. At the moment $100 canĂ¢€™t buy anything that I can think of that I want at the moment so I would save my money longer and get something I really want. Unfortunately for me that is going to be a long wait because I am thinking that my next photography purchase is going to be a 600mm f/4L IS.
