True. And I'm not American and so have no "memorial day" traditions or celebrations or memorials that I can photograph either. Speed challenges are "extra" or "bonus", and often what becomes a speed challenge is like Valentine's Day or St Paddy's Day or Hallowe'en..but that doesn't mean no one can suggest another topic that is suited to a speed challenge. Sorry if non-US people felt left out -- that, I am sure, was not the intention, but rather another way to recognize a very important US holiday. |
I also like Tiberius was not complaining Frisca, only observing. |

Most of the DPC challenges are universal.
Some of the DPC challenges are very VERY American.
I'm ok with that. It may not be entirely fair - since I pay the same amount of membership money as every American does - but I'm still ok with it. I, personally, have no right to complain since I enter so few challenges, anyway.
However, just because someone decides to mention it/discuss it/question it does NOT make it "squawking".
Sometimes we need to agree to disagree and allow others a voice and an opinion even when we do NOT share it. |

The suggestion of the "Memorial Day" speed challenge was based only on the celebration in US this last weekend. As any suggestion, it is subject to the consideration and approval of the SC.
Speed challenges normally go for 48 hours, hence the "Images taken since yesterday, Friday, until this Monday." timeline.
I'm sorry if anyone felt left out or saw it as unfair for people living out of US. Believe me, that was not the intention at all.
Thanks for your comment, frisca. |

Yeah, we're people. We do that. :-)
Squawking about others squawking is what some squawkers squawk about, for others it's just a matter of squawking to hear themselves squawk. Some have a valid squawk and others think they do but it's actually more of a quack than a squawk.
Really though, this squawk is pretty justified in my opinion. Speed challenge = 48 hours. Use memorial day as a week-long challenge if you want (like cinco de mayo was), or 48-hour challenge before/during, but announcing something as a 24h challenge on a day that is really about the US (really, the rest of the world does this in November, and i understand the reasoning with the USA doing May, just squawking about a lead-in point) while not doing the same thing regarding other countries events in a similar fashion is a lot biased.
It's what the SC and site admins chose to do, and that's their call, but that doesn't mean it's totally fair and equal. Many of us have jobs. Many of those jobs have regular hours and as such we have regular sleep patterns which eats into a fair chunk of the 24h provided for this (quite honestly i would have only had about 90 minutes available to me yesterday to Find and Then shoot with natural light based around work/life needs, whereas a 48h would have at least given a bit more time to plan something out).
So yeah, to close the circle, the squawking on this topic is not meant for joe-blow-user, it's meant to let the admins know that crap moves like this are not appreciated by their paying members, which is another squawk on top of an increasingly vocal pile of squawks. |

Just to snip this one part and to bounce off your post, the US does remember the Veterans who fought in war on 11/11 as do many other countries. Memorial Day is for those who were killed in war. |

FYI SC members have no role in scheduling challenges since we also (can) participate, and knowing the challenge topic ahead of time would be an unfair advantage.
Considering that the site is based in the USA, and most of the members (and all administrators) live there, it's not that unreasonable that some challenges might seem to be US-biased, and yet it seems to me that we do a fairly good job of recognizing other countries/cultures: Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican history, and there was a recent Spring/Fall challenge recognizing that we have members in the Southern Hemisphere as well.
Also, almost all challenge topics are drawn from member suggestions, so feel free to propose a challenge acknowledging Bastille Day or any other regional celebration you think might be appropriate ... |

This paying member is tired of people bitching about free stuff that doesn't suit them. It's a speed challenge, a bonus, and not part of the regular lineup. To call it a "crap move" that isn't appreciate by a paying member is like you complaining about getting a free peperoni pizza because you're a vegetarian. |

Okay, i've typed up a full 8 paragraph response, read it, changed it and deleted it in full. I feel better having done that.
In short: i have had 5 family members and a best friend as members of the armed forces, i have nothing but respect for them, what they do and what they risk. I was not trying to belittle or demain them in any way.
I understand the difference between Memorial Day and the services in November in the US, i am in no way trying to state that it is wrong to hold vigils more than once per year (anybody directly involved prays for their family/friends on an almost daily basis). I simply feel that it deserved more than 24 hours to shoot/edit/upload (even 48 is better than 24), I would love to have participated but could not do so due to the time constraints.
I apologize for stating that the SC was involved, that was a factual error on my part.
I am not saying anything else on the topic of squawking/bitching in the forums. i do have respect for the people here and do not want to derail this thread or restart an ages-old fight. |

Ah, you have discovered one of the important tricks for effective communications in the forum format -- one I use myself with some frequency. :-)
Obviously, the challenge should have been posted at the beginning of the weekend -- AFAIK we've never had a speed-challenge where photos taken before the announcement were eligible for submission, as in this case.
I would say that this is probably what is known in technical jargon as a "mistake." |

If I had a dollar for every post I deleted before posting, I would have a free membership.
Yes, rest of the world, we someimes forget that you do not have the same traditions as we do. For that I apologize.
But then what the heck is boxing day? :-) Do you really get it all out of your system tben? ;-) Can we have a speed challenge for it?
If our members from other countries would like to suggest speed challenges that reflect their culture or heritage, I'm all for that. Sounds like a great opportunity to learn about/from others. |

You do realize of course that with this statement you are bringing us full circle right?

Can you not understand that proffering such a pizza to a vegetarian might possibly be considered an affront. That my friend would seem to be the issue at hand in this instance... at least from my perspective anyways.

If a free Pepperoni pizza were offered to a Vegan, where the person making the offer already knew of the dietary preferences of the other, I would see that as insulting to the Vegan and wrong.
If it was an honest, innocent offer, then the I see the Vegan as being a bit prickly. One cannot know in advance the sensitivites of anyone who might come across said offer. |

Challenge Details:
Parades, gravestones, flags, war memorials, armed forces, cook-outs, beach vacations, patriotism, protests, celebration, etc.
I see "beach vacations" didn't make the cut for any submissions. ???! :-) Afraid of the DNMC police I guess? LOL |

Seriously. How come there weren't any "cook-outs" or "beach vacations" entries? :-D |

I was at a barbecue, but didn't take or submit any pictures from that because I knew it would do poorly. People only read the challenge name most times. And the ones who do read the description seem to do so only for the purposes of seeing what they can dnmc. |
