I have purchased Kindles and Kobo readers for family and friends and have noticed that, as with all things, people either swear by them or at them. It must be a personal preference thing.

I have the original Kindle fire, and it's between 1.5 and 2 years old (forget exactly when I bought it, but it was one of the first shipments).
It's worked very well...no problem with the battery--still good life.
I like:
- As a frequent Amazon customer, I like the integration and ease of purchasing.
- Screen is very good.
- Size is convenient...but a bit small for Internet browsing for me.
- Daily free apps from the Amazon store.
I don't like:
- The lack of a good secure password manager. I use Lastpass for the web, and it's a pain on the Kindle...it's confusing because when you select something, you have to pick whether to use the built in browser or Amazon's browser. I just want to go to the damn website and autolog in. In fact, I want it to work just like lastpass does on Windows Chrome...I just go to the website, Lastpass fills in the login or autologs me in (depending on how I set the site). Can it be that hard to just do the same on a tablet?
- Lack of 3G/4G. But it's a first generation device.
- Lack of a microphone. But again, I knew that and it's first generation. But I could use skype on it if it supported a mic!
- Locked out of the Google Play store.
