in a studio environment, take a picture using a set up (no natural lighting) that was bought with a budget of $5. everyone would have to provide information on the lighting and props set up after the challenge.

these were taken with two old desk lamps and a wall:

Gee, one wall of my house cost more than the $5. No lights for me.

The aussie dollar is worth US$1.05, so I can spend US$5.25

My studio is my bathroom.

My studio is the dining room, which is about the size of an average bathroom. I have to spend 30 minutes clearing all the furniture out and setting up every time I use it. Then 30 more minutes breaking down and moving furniture back.

Ignoring the wall, which must have been not included in the total, tell me how you managed two lamps and two bulbs for under $5?

Perhaps we could better approach this as the "Hot-light side challenge" - since it seems like that's really what you're advocating - and since the $5 rule would be unenforceable, plus pointless, it seems better to just think of this as a technique side challenge.

With that being said? I might join you for a shot here. I used to use hot-lights for everything.

I agree, the price point is unenforceable. Perhaps we could go with low budget setups, and a picture of the setup being a requirement.

I'd be very interested in seeing what can be done with less than high end toys.

I don't have any high-end toys (lighting-wise anyway), but these are some of what I think are my best "studio" shots using a swing-arm desk lamp with a CFL bulb and/or a small clip-on lamp with another CFL bulb.
(possibly used a tiny flashlight here)

Yes! Flashlight photography!
Use only one flashlight in a dark space for this one.
