Country music legend George Jones has passed away he was 81. I have been a fan for a long time. He had songs like "white lightning". My condolences to his friends and family.

I wouldn't expect him to be well known in the UK. A lot of Americans won't be familiar with him either, if they are not country music fans. If you are a C&W fan, he's a legend.

+1. But I just watched White Lightning (1959, I was 3 at that time) and I love it!

An all time great with a voice and style instantly recognizable and so truly inimitable that no one even tried. His album of duets with Tammy stands out in my listening and still makes it to my turntable as dated as that is in these digital times.

George was pure country, he could spin a sad tale with amazing economy. If you never heard him he was a classic. He is best heard on the radio in a pickup rolling down the road out in the wide empty, but give a listen to these.

Some of my favorite lines:
Be real about what you do. Stay true to the voice inside you. Don't let the "business" change what it is you love because the people, the fans, respond to what is heartfelt. They can always tell when a singer is faking it.

Me and the bottle have always been friends, we've had a few old nasty fights but the bottle would always win, so when I go to answer that final curtain call, I can hear these words being whispered by all... Ol' George stopped drinking today.

I'll drink one to his memory tonight.
