For verification purposes, do I need to keep the originals actually *on the card itself*, or can I go ahead and transfer them, unedited, to my hard drive. I need to reformat a card that is acting up, but it has several images I'm considering for the April Free Study. If asked for verification, I want to know if I need to pull it straight from the card, or can I send the copy that is on the computer's hard drive.

Thanks. :)

You can keep them on the hard drive. the safest way to transfer them is to use a card reader and drag 'n drop to the storage folder.

You can send it from your hard drive.

Good question. I don't drag and drop my files, but rather copy and import my RAW files using Lightroom. In this case, would those files come up as edited by LR3 in the EXIF data even thought I've not touched them?

I import my RAW files with LR also and use them if validation is needed.

Thanks Mark, good to know they would still be valid.

I have imported using Aperture for years now and no problem, i doubt LR would be any different.

When using Lightroom to transfer, I believe if you convert to DNG that may be an issue. You would as I understand it need the original raw file that came from the camera.

Not to worry, Garry. Only the top five shots get validated. ;-)

If its been through LR it will not be any good for validation.
You need to keep the original file.

You will need the RAW file not the one that has been into LR.

To be clear, a RAW imported by Lr is still a valid original, unless, as pointed out above,it has been converted to DNG. A JPEG *exported* from Lr is not a valid original, and an image shot in JPEG and imported by Lr may or may not be a valid original, depending if it is tagged by Lr.

Only the top five images are automatically validated. However, even a last-place finisher can be subject to validation either during or after the voting.

FWIW I transfer my images (JPEGs) using a card reader, and I don't erase them from the card until I've backed those up to opticalmedia (CD/DVD). I try to always maintain two copies of data on two different forms of media.

Slippy was poking fun at me and my chances of a top 5, he wasn't being serious about the validations.

Yup. :-D
I can do that because I know you'll be getting ribbons soon enough.

He doesn't know when to stop, just keeps rubbing it in.

A ribbon is as elusive as a Tasmanian wolf at a dodo's teaparty.

LOL! But seriously, you've finished in the top 10 four times (almost 10% of your entries) and the the best three of those could easily have ribboned in some challenges. It seems like it will never happen, until *bam*, it just does.
