I got a DQ request for my submission in abstract. I tried to send in proof and they wrote back saying they needed it from the camera, I had sized it down and then jpeged it. So what I need to know is do you want the raw or the processed raw? If you need the raw there is a whole set of bigger problems. I asked these questions on the link in the e-mail and have not gotten a response yet. I am hoping this will be quicker. Another question is I tried to submit the raw processed image and it told me that it needed and valid ID. What is this all about? |

Send the RAW file to be on the safe side.

The EXIF data that contains the exposure date and time gets lost when images are transformed. Just send the raw file even if it takes hours!

The thing is, if I send the raw they will only get an icon that they cannot open. You need the software that I have to view the actual RAW image. It does have the date and stuff, but you cannot actually see the image with out the software. They can see it onced it has been processed.

I would suspect they'll have whatever software they need to view it. the thumbnail you're talking about is actually a little jpeg file stored with the raw data for quick viewing. |

So they will have the camera operation software that is particular to my camera. I am the only one an the site that uses this camera. It is a digital back on a hasselblad. The images are not stored on a card or anything like that. They are placed directly on the computer via fire wire. The only way to view the raw is with the cameras software. |

I understand your dilemma, G4Ds. My fav camera is so old (1993 vintage) it doesn't even have EXIF data, so I can't use it for DPC entries.
It's raw files are also VERY LARGE (9.5 megabytes). With my dialup connection it would indeed take hours to upload, and even then would not satisfy the requirements.
Now that I know what kind of camera you are using, it may not have data that is readable by the committee. The format mine uses is proprietary and so old that unless you have the original software, the image cannot be read.

If the camera is really old, is the raw file still really huge? I say submit the raw, and we'll check it out. If it's not what we need, then we'll try something else. Not quite sure what file you need, but we'll go till we get it right, hopefully. I will also refer the rest of site council to this thread, and see if the more EXIF experienced members have a clue. |

huh. Who knew? Then I'd just convert it to a tiff (or something uncompressed) and send that. Alternatively i guess you could send the raw data and the conversion program :)
Good luck,

I had asked last week about the direct from camera thing and the replies all made it sound that the uploaded version on my hard-drive would be fine. Technically it has been compressed (by the camera) and a rotation if needed. I always re-name, also. Am I going to have trouble if I ever get a DQ??? |

It's probably worth zipping the raw file too. They're not necessarily compressed, and you could save yourself some upload time. :-) |

The camera is not old. The raw image has EXIF data. The program is not just conversion software, it is the whole program that makes the digital back work. However I might be able to send it, I just don't know if it will work. I will try to send the raw. SC please let me know what I can do. |

My old camera is old enough that the software to read the format will run only on a 16-bit operating system, which excludes most modern computers. Trust me, I've tried it. I use an ancient laptop computer with an antique OS to take the files off the camera's builtin hard drive.

I have refered this to the other site council members, as I'm not really sure what to do. |

Just send us the RAW - we've got various bits of software that should be able to view it...
