Hoping you can help me here. Been having sporadic "issues" with Lightroom 3 that I just can't figure out.

Occasionally, when I'm done editing a photo and want to save for DPC, I try to export as a JPEG with the constraints being 800px on the long edge, and file size maximum 300kb. Every now and then I get an error message saying LR can not export my image and meet the 300kb file size. I have no idea why this happens.

However, this evening, I got around this by changing the constraint to 1000kb file size and LR3 exported no problem. BUT, when I look at the resulting file --- it was only 229kb!! I don't understand why LR3 said it couldn't meet the 300kb limit when clearly it just did?

This frustrates me. I wish I understood why it sporadically gives me issues trying to save for DPC.

Does anybody know why this is or how I can avoid this?

well my problem is when i constrain to 300kb, it swill save it to like 100kb, my sports entry is 89kb

the tiff file is 476MB.

i have no idea what the hack it does to constrain the image, i can manually set it to export at say 85% (it varies) to get the file size as close to 300kb as possible but after playing with this i just don't notice a quality difference, so i just let it do what it wants to and save myself the time.

LR4 btw, i see your issue is with LR3

it is weird behavior, and the variables can be fun to play with, trying to figure out just what is going on. sometimes, when i think it's really going to matter, i take the largest file i can get into photoshop and export from there (photoshop's save for web function gives you a lot more control over file sizes).

I wish Lightroom had a Save for Web feature. The current setup drives me bonkers when it's acting up.

the problem is lightroom cant save for web.

photoshop imports the cr2 file creates a tif or psd and then you must downsamples the image to the size you want.

lightroom take all the data holds onto it and then creates the files type based on the criteria you setup. its doesnt create a usuabl file until you hit export.

like i mentioned earlier, you can manually step down your quality when exporting as opposed to specifying a limit. i believe that feature was there in LR3.

Mike, you can step down the quality...but you have no idea what the resulting filesize is going to be. The idea of doing this repeatedly until I hit 300kb is not appealing since I'd then have so many duplicates.

true, this is why i just stopped and just let LR do its thing. i cant tell any difference in quality from a 300kb 800px file and a 100kb file. clearly there is some difference, i just cant see it.

I no longer have a Lr 3.X installation to play with, but a short test of Lr 4.3 revealed the following:
Exporting with a 300kb limit and 800x800 px size limitation:
- Exporting a very smooth image with only small areas of high detail results in a small file, around 145kB
- Exporting an image with lots of fine detail results in a file of about 260kB.

Exporting with Quality set to 90 and 800x800 px size limitation:
- Exporting the low-detail image resulted in a file size of 101kB
- Exporting the high-detail image resulted in a file size of 671kB

The low-detail image can be exported at Quality = 100 and is still only 160kB. The high-detail image is 870kB at Q=100. The high-detail image needs to be exported at Q<65% to get below 300kB.

So, my take-away from this is that unless you have an image with very larger areas of fine detail, you will be fairly well served bey just selecting the size limit and pixel size and Lr and exporting. If you do have a lot of fine detail that you want to preserve, Lr has no way to tell you what the maximum quality setting is to get under the limit. In this case, best practice is to export a 2x (1600x1600) or larger image at very high quality and bring it into Ps for resizing/sharpening and then "Save for Web or Devices."
