Call me the black sheep, but I am quite happy with my Playbook with 64GB at ~ $200.
Widescreen like the Android and actually plays Flash (had to throw that in for all the iFans ;-)
More and more apps ported from Android all the time as well. No, it doesn't have all the apps that Android and Apple have, but it's not bad and it is a fraction of the cost. Great for web browsing, viewing pictures and videos and reading. Really comes down to what you want to use it for more than anything else. |

Not often that I will knock a product (but)
I purchased one of the original Kindles and it broke. I sent it back and they sent me another one. It lasted fine, but I eventually wanted a later model. 18 months later, it too broke and that's when I discovered the warranty lasts 12 months. They did offer a $50 rebate on a 'cheap' upgrade. However, that was a piece of (I paraphrase) material that was difficult to use and I returned it.
So, these days, in order to read the 300-400 books I have that can only be read on a Kindle, I get to use the early version or nothing.
Someday, I'll probably spring for another Kindle, but it will be a while.
Summary - I wish their products were more reliable - especially when they presently seem to be exclusive devices. |

umm.... I forgot to mention this problem. My 7-year-old son has ended up hogging the iPad mini, resulting in constant bickering over who gets to use it.
They've had to set up a schedule where they're only allowed to use it at certain times of the day.
So yes, it's in big demand in our house. My iPhone 5 just isn't good enough for them when the mini is around. |

Alice, Apple idevices have a Kindle App â€Â¦ so you should be able to read it on an iPad or whatever, FYI.
Anyway, upon hearing how a Kindle a Amazon controlled environment that essentially uses Android but in a more limited Amazon-centric way - I am turned off.
I realize apple does this in its own way too, because the device needs to be jailbroken to install a certain genre of apps, but considering that hundreds of thousands of apps are available, it makes iOS seem more free/open.
Now to decide whether this is something to invest in - as of now it doesn't meet a need - it merely would give us another toy I think.
The Xbox 360 kinect seems like an interesting thing to check out - ANY OPINIONS ON THAT ? =]

Everything Apple is about 'want' and not 'need' (and Android for that matter). Especially the gaming and social network addictions these gadgets feed.
Can't remember the last time I found myself in urgent need of a game of Angry Birds.

Yeah for sure. First-world issues. I'm sure there aren't too many people in tents in Haiti saying "if only there was an app for this" â€Â¦

Not to derail the thread, but if you have a multi-apple-gadget household, what the best way to setup the apple IDs? - One AppleID for all the gadgets? - Or if everyone has their own appleID, is it possible to share apps? This always confuses me, I usually end up buying the app twice. |
My two sons both have iPods, I have an iPhone and a mac. I have all the content under my Apple ID so if they want to get an app (even free ones) I have to approve it and enter my password. The content is then shared across all devices. The also have their own ID's so that I can send them messages and FaceTime.

I see. It was the difference between AppleID (for the app store) and iCloud ID (for facetime, messages, device backup) that I didn't quite understand. I was worried that by setting the same AppleID across all devices, you wouldn't be able to do facetime (for example) between them as Apple would see them all as the same user. |

It works like a charm, the only downside being that all of their silly apps clutter up my phone automagically. |

In settings in the iDevice on iTunes & App Store you can set the automatic downloads on or off.

Well, I never purchased anything back when I was writing the original post.
But now our iPad 1 is dead (wife dropped it) and I will try to sell it on eBay (people buy broken iPads apparently).
The apple-store couldn't help us at all.
So â€Â¦ I'm going to get her an iPad 2 (or 3 or 4) for mother's day (from all of us).
QUESTION: Since she is really not that tech savvy and was pretty happy with the iPad 1, there's no reason to choose the iPad 3 or 4 over the iPad 2, correct???? |

Get at least the iPad 3, and if there is little difference in price, the 4.
The screen upgrade alone is MORE than worth it. The Retina display on the iPad 3 (same as the 4) is an amazing improvement over the 2.
And the speed...these things get so much faster with every release. She will be much much happier with a 3 or a 4 than a 2. |

I had (had) a Kindle Fire. Pretty good, but the battery does not last that long so constantly having to plug it in. SO of course the plug hole got all lose. Then the battery pack started expanding (meant to be a common problem) and expanded and expanded until it burst through the side and the screen.
Of course it was out of warranty, but it is expensive to replace with this common problem unless you are in warranty |

If you are already using Apple products for all your computing needs then get the iPad. I have been using only Apple products for almost 10 years now, because the integration between all of their devices is so seamless. If you get a different tablet I think you will regret your decision when trying to sync stuff between your different platforms. |

I use all of Apples default programs for web browsing, email, contacts, calendar, todo list, etc. Everything is synced automatically between my desktop, laptop, phone, tablet. If I find a cool site and save a bookmark it is on my other platforms instantly, or if find a cool article but don't have time to read I can add it to my reading list and access it later on any device. Was upset when they did away with the old cloud storage so now I use dropbox but it works really well with all my devices and various apps on my mobile devices. The strange part is even tho I love all the perfect integration between devices I do not use the photo stream ability. Mainly because I have switched from using Aperture to Lightroom.
I am not sure about syncing all the stuff I mentioned above to different tablets but I know from using various smart phones (before iPhone came to Verizon) that syncing between a Mac and a different smart phone was a lesson in frustration and futility.

i can't speak for apple but android allows you to add in all sorts of accounts, google, windows live, etc and sync all that stuff. obviously its streamlined if you use goggle for everything but its not like its hard to do with all the other services as well. |

I understand that but, but getting an android device to sync with an Apple computer (is like this for phones and I assume it is the same for tablets based on Android OS) is a frustrating endeavor. The only real option to switch everything to another service (i.e. google, not sure about integration with windows live), but you lose a lot of the benefits of using all Apple products. Like it or not, Apple does a wonderful job of making all their devices act in a seamless environment and difficult to integrate other products without switching to a completely different service. |

Have a think about the iPad Mini as well. Which gives a retina-like display as it crams the same number of pixels as an iPad2 into a smaller screen. Plus, it's lighter and easier to hold while in bed etc. And also easier to put into a bag or pocket (if you have big pockets lol) |

I have a mix of Android and Apple devices, and found it was quite reasonable to configure the iPhone to sync with my google account for everything, using the normal iPhone apps. I use my iCloud account to back up the apps and stuff, but my contacts and calendar and stuff are all synced with my google account.
IIRC, going the other way would have required exporting everything out of iCloud, importing into google, then managing everything there. But that wasn't all that hard, either.

This morning I went out and bought a Nexus 7 because I really like an e-reader and just won't get another Kindle.
The fact that I can (once I figure out how) read my Kindle collection on this little guy was a strong
selling point.
Thanks for the link, and thanks, Tate for pointing me in a different direction with your post back a page or two. |
