Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, a man of the people, the first Pope from the new world, has been elected. Might this represent a turning point for the Catholic Church?

ETA: And how wonderful that he is the first Pope to choose the name "Francis" for himself, for Francis of Assisi was, himself, a humble man of the people, a man of no pretension and no frills.

I pray the new pope guides the Catholic Church along the path of a gentle orthodoxy.

Not Catholic, not really religious, but wishing all the best for Pope Francis.

From what I've heard he's considered a "staunch religious conservative" -- he came in second in the last election. I wouldn't expect any "progressive" change, other than perhaps a more diligent application of the churchly duty to feed, house, and clothe the poor. Maybe he can wash a beggar's feet twice a year ... I suppose we can all pray he has a road to Damascus moment and brings the Church forward a few centuries ...

LOL... you'd *have* to pray, a miracle is the only hope of that.

Given that the pool of Cardinals were all appointed by the last 2 popes who were quite conservative, all the possible candidates were conservative. That said from the pool of candidates I have heard he is not in the conservative wing of that conservative group.
Francis I Espouses Orthodoxy On Spiritual Matters While Advocating Social Justice For Poor

First Pope named Francis, first non-European, first Jesuit. He has done well patching up the mess after the church's support of the dictatorships in Argentina came home to roost, perhaps he can start to clean up the fiscal mess in the Papacy, not to mention the sex scandals in the clergy.

Hallelujah! lol.

..

Seriously, my expectations are so low as to be almost non-existent - but if he can at least follow through on the commitment to the poor I will have a modicum of respect for him.

Not that I really think we can expect much significant change - the RCC is such a big behemoth of an entity any directional change, even relatively rapid change, will occur at a glacial rate.

What I do find interesting is the implicit admission, via the choice of name, that the church is in a bad place, and needs saving from the state it is currently in. Not that it wasn't obvious to everyone, but the admission is, to me, stunning and unexpected - remember this is the organization who's effective policy seems to have been "Pretend it didn't happen"..

I'm disappointed in his glasses. I want a Pope that wears glasses like Scott Summers, AKA: Cyclops from the X-Men. What's the point in a Pope that doesn't have high energy optic blasts constantly threatening to erupt from his eyes that he has to battle with daily to keep under control?

Or at least he could get something classically papal like Elton Johns.

Please guys... save us from Tv invaded by news of the new Pope. It's like it doesn't matter that we've just had elections here in Italy (and no one is able to know who won...)

It doesn't matter!! We've been without a government for over a month and everything's fine. And by fine, I mean as crappy as before.

That's the point - I even thought that behind that window there was Berlusconi. I'm quite sure that being Pope is his unconfessed dream!

Yup. Ring in the new Pope, same as the old Pope. Still it's interesting that he's the first non-european Pope from a country that has FULL marriage equality and LGBT civil rights. He wasn't a fan of that though. He was very angry. He's a bit more progressive on condoms i guess though. They can help to stop the spread of disease apparently.
