Any idea how good or bad this Canon lense is? EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III USM and what is the difference with the EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 II USM model? They seem the same but price is different. Are they AF?
I can't afford expensive lenses so this lense together with the 18-55 kit lense for the 300D seem a good option. I shoot a lot of aeroplanes from far away and some sport photos (not pro) |

It̢۪s a decent lens for what you pay. I think it is a good value. I would save a little more money and get the non-USM version. The AF feels just as fast and it costs less.

I have this exact lens and very happy with it. It's not comparable of course to the L series lenses BUT as a compliment to the EFS18-55 it is an excellent choice if you don't want to fork out the dough.
Focus is fast and accurate and it's also light - making it good for i.e. casual hiking.
It is a bit soft on both extremities but again - good for what it's worth. |

As far as the difference between the II USM and III USM versions it appears to be pretty much cosmetic. Here's a quote from Canon.
Developed to succeed the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 II USM, which was marketed in March, 1995, this compact, lightweight high- magnification telephoto zoom lens covers medium telephoto 75 mm to super telephoto 300 mm. Like the EF28-80mm f/3.5 -5.6 V USM, it has a metal ring at the front of the zoom ring to give it an upscale image. It incorporates a Micro USM that enables quick and silent focusing. For environment protection, only lead-free glass lens elements are used.

i have the non-USM version of ther 75-300mm
the majority of my shots in my profile were taken with it.
i dont find it lacking shaprness on the wide end - many of my shots were done at f:5.6 / 480mm equiv. it isnt good with bright back light.
you get purple fringing. its a lot lighter than the sigma equivelant - and takes the same size lense filters as the efs18-55mm - although the sigma offers a 1:2 macro - and is less money.

| Thanx for all your comments. I need the extra zoom so I will preffer the 75-300 rather than the 70-200 |
