| New assembled computer of my son with a Z77 Extreme 4 motherboard. Never worked completely yet, but now it's completely dead. No beep, no light anywhere when turning the power on. I tried the new PSU on an old computer: OK. Used an old working PSU on the new one: also no single sign of life. Now the best way is of course to sent it back, but perhaps someone here has a hint of other things I can look for. Spent already many hours on Google without any clue. Thanks in advance. |

I don't have any good advice not being an electrical engineer, but what I would do is check that all the chips are seated properly, and look for anything potentially shorting the board. Broken capacitors?
With a voltmeter you could check with power on if there's power at the right terminals of the chips. Back when I did more of this sort of thing (software engineer at GE working on LAN prototypes which did involve hardware), it was Pin 1 or Pin 16 of a 16 pin chip that were the two power leads. But if you can find a service manual for the board, it would tell you places to check! |

And look to see if there's a fuse somewhere on the board. |

| Thanks already. It's almost midnight here at the moment, so I'll give all the connections an extra check in the morning and take the board out. |

Yeah check all the connections....if you have an olm meter you might check the PSU. It may just be a bad motherboard. I have received bad boards occasionally.

| Hurray! I took the board out this morning and found a tiny black screw. Put the board back, pressed some buttons (reset and power) and everything is working now. Thanks! |
