In Expert Editing, if I want to use different backgrounds or textures or effects (eg. Water splash) or parts of a composite, do I have to photo them myself or can I take stock images? I guess my question is, does EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT of a composite have to be photographed by me in the challenge timeframe?

Yes

Except

images that do not meet the source or date requirements as textures in your entry if they function specifically as textures and not to circumvent other rules.

be VERY careful with textures. i got a DQ because apparently you have to apply a texture a certain way. IMO shoot EVERYTHING YOURSELF.

No, you've been DQ'ed for using clipart (or an older image), not overlay or texture

I agree with mike_311 - shoot everything yourself and do it within the time frame. I once decided I needed a texture the night of roll-over. Went out in the driveway, turned on the light, and shot the concrete so I'd have kind of what I wanted and could apply it as and how I wished. And this is good reason to make sure you change the time on your camera this weekend - I usually shoot more in advance but sometimes things come up that make those minutes critical.

What Mike is saying, IMO, is that the definition of "texture" as interpreted by the SC is so narrow that it is nearly useless. Much better to shoot everything yourself and not worry.

No, I got dqd for applying a texture improperly. It wasn't interpreted by sc as a texture. I didn't shoot it myself so I flunked. The concrete texture on the face passed, even those both were clip arts from the net.

If you shoot it all yourself you can do whatever you want in expert, except text.

Okay, thanks all. I guess I will play it safe and photo every little tidbit and texture.

Now, to just be creative and find the texture I'm looking for.

it sucks that you need to jump through such hoops, but it the safest way.

Ii you drew an image for a texture of distressing technique, would that be likely to pass muster ?
