Solutions to problems are more often a function of timing as opposed to method anyway. Maybe this is the time, maybe its not.

I understand that some don't believe its a problem.

This thread, however, was posted so suggestions to perceived problems could be put forward. I think the lack of oversight, direct involvement is a problem. Not in the sense that it detracts from the site. I enjoy the site when I can break away from other things. Rather, I believe the site could be improved significantly and that progress is hindered because its apparent to me for whatever reason the owner isn't willing to make the additional investment in time or dollars.

All I wanted to know was; Has anyone approached the owner with an offer? If so how was it received? Thanks for the partial answer.

If buying the site isn't an option, then only two remain, build a new one, or risk watching it fritter away through slow attrition.

Maybe it lingers for years. I doubt that, but I suppose its possible.

Well....we know what you think now.

Can we stipulate that, and move on?

It never ceases to amaze me that someone thinks that their thoughts should dictate a change simply because of their perception.

Clearly you think things should stay the same because of your perception.

What's the difference?

Oh I'm sorry. Do tell me what I should think.

I didn't realize I was the only one laboring under that perception. I could have sworn someone else chastised me for bringing up a subject that had been brought up ad nauseam before. Thought I had company.

May I suggest you reread my earlier posts, then stop a moment and reflect on what was actually said.

darn, urban legend...

Persistent legend too. It's been a story line for at least as long as I've been coming around.

I certainly understand the pressures of family life. I just think someone should make a run at buying the site. I'm wondering if anyone has made an offer and how it was received. If I were in the same shoes, I think I'd prefer to unload it rather than watch it drift away. And the number of entries per challenge are down. And there is a palpable sense the site isn't what it used to be and the site owner still doesn't seem to be engaged.

So, either buy it, or start a new one. I'd be happy to contribute to either cause, but I don't see how this site improves without access to the controls.

I started here in 2002, so from my perspective entries are up 200% or so. Average entries were 40 to 50 if I recall... The site actually is very close to what it use to be and Langdon seems to be amazingly consistant in the light hand that keeps this place what it is. What has changed from what I see is that some people wish the site WASN'T the way it use to be (and still is). Some folks dream of a different site which is bigger, flashier, and more crowded. I never saw that here and would likely be inclined to leave if I did.

Actually I'm wrong... Now that I think about the fact that some folks want to see a different site here is not actually all that new either. There have always been folks looking for greener grass. Me? I like a little crab grass now and then... If this site ever does become the flashy glitzy thing some are looking for, I hope Langdon keeps this up as well, maybe even returning more to it's roots where it wasn't a photoshop contest but a photography contest.

This is a nice little cozy corner of the internet and it'd be a shame to lose it. [/quote

I wholly agree that the site's format is just fine...perfect almost...and should be tampered with as little as possible. There was once a site called Bytephoto of which I was a member long ago which had a very nice format, much like DPC, and then it had a change of ownership and the whole site format was changed. They are much, much busier since that change but the site has become very cluttered and difficult to navigate and the format and style the way winning entries are displayed is very unsatisfying. I hope that DPC stays in the current format as much as possible if ever it changes ownership. Here is that bytephotos site. Go have a look and see what I mean.

No......as usual, you like to put your own spin on things.

I said nothing of the kind.

I'm just amazed that after 22 pages of this thread, some people who have all the answers and their own way of "fixing" the site haven't figured out that the site is here to avail yourself of what it offers.

Like it, great.......you've figured out a way to put it to good use.

Don't like it, fine, but why must it be changed just because of YOUR (Whomever) opinions and perceptions?

There is a clear majority of people here who are more than happy with what's offered than not. They participate, shoot, edit, learn, enjoy, share, put together side challenges, sell things, buy things, write tutorials, mentor others, get mentored........the list goes on. And they're better people and photographers because of both the site and the community.

And so this never-ending thread is simply boorish.

It's Langdon's site to do with as he sees fit. Period, end of discussion.

Changes will happen, or they won't.

People will come and go.

It is what it is, so why waste a bunch of energy trying to figure out something with no real facts?

If Langdon wanted all this advice, opinions, and solutions that to the proponents are so much better, don't you think he would have asked?

And yet, without one iota of inquiry from the owner of a pretty decent site that's been trundling along quite nicely for ten years as to wanting all these "solutions", there seem to be regular donations to the "knowledge" pool on how to "fix" it.

If all this energy spent by people trying to change things was spent on photography, then maybe the site would not only be so disappointing to them, but the site's functionality would be more obvious to these same folks.

I know I rely on myself to take advantage of what's here, and after six and a half years and over 350 challenges, I still learn, grow, am inspired, and have a great deal of fun.

But hey, what do I know????

Typical Jeb.

You did just that.

Yet here you are, time after time, condemning those who want change and see fit to post those ideas here. Why do you keep coming back to this thread? Do you get off on putting other people and their suggestions down because they think DPC could be better? You do realize that one of the changes from the original site is the ability to ignore forum threads so you don't have to deal with such "boorish" behavior, don't you?

And, Langdon did ask for ideas. As far as I know, like most smart people who provide a product, he's never asked for them to stop.

As to being wasted energy. It's their energy to waste, not yours. If they see fit to offer suggestions here, what's it to you anyway?

A better question for you ask yourself is why do you waste your energy putting other people's ideas down? Why not put just that much more into your blissful enjoyment of DPC?
03/06/2013 01:13:57 PM · #566
All I want from DPC is to be able to compose a post to end all posts, to give people a piece of my mind, but where I get loads of +1's and people saying "Well said", and for it to be the last post in a thread before it gets locked.

Is that too much to ask?

I've been watching off and on. Could this be the week DPC drops below 1000 paid members? We're sitting at 1006.

I found a post of mine from December, 2009 where I listed 1953 paid members. In three years we have lost 50% of the members.

No, sorry......you're projecting again. You assume that others are snarky and bitter like you, and behave in the same manner.

I've not condemned, nor put anyone down for their suggestions or posting.

But as long as people exercise their right to condemn and put down the site and its administration, I will certainly offer up an opposing point of view.

While we're at it, do you get off on being snarky and bitter rather than actually doing anything related to photography on the site?

One might wonder if you're here just to be a mean SOB. It seems you only show up to pick fights.

During which period the economy has been in the tank, and perhaps there are some who might be able to afford the $25, but not the time to justfy it as they scramble to get by.

What I've noticed lately is a trend of people who've been away (sometimes for years) but are now returning, and finding a familiar friend ... maybe think of DPC as the VW Bug of photography sites: reliable transportation which runs forever, even if underpowered, unchanging, unadorned, and unsafe in a major collision ... ;-)

To each his own I guess... I for one rather enjoyed the comments posted by Simms. Short, concise, occasionally terse, devoid of diplomatic inconveniences and jibberish, and very clear in intent.

You really ought not to take this personally Cory, I am confident that our friend meant it in the nicest of ways. :O)

I could be that some former members derive the same pleasure without having to dole out the membership fees. :O)

Perhaps. But his intent was clear enough - as was mine. He's not a bad guy, hell I generally like him - but even my friends are subject to a good telling off once they've crossed the line.

I am no sheep, and the suggestion that because I enjoy DPC, and the friends I have here, that I am somehow a useless, mindless follower is a rather offensive statement.

I hope he understands that my comment was simply delivered with the same terse form, completely devoid of diplomatic inconveniences.
