try taking a picture of moving subject in less than optimal conditions and you wont miss your 10 grand worth of gear. |
Sure, but take your 10k worth of gear and try to get a DOF that extends from four inches out to infinity.
Bet you can't do it without the camera-phone. :) |
Can I introduce you to my 16MM Fisheye on a full frame sensor? :D

I don't believe you. At least, not below the diffraction limit.
Remember, I have a 12mm and the 5D myself. ;)

Technical difference aside (though in reality it drives what I'm about to say), kit does change how you see the world as a photographer and how you are seen. If I stick a Lensbaby on my camera, my brain does different things - I'm looking for a different shot; if I use my G11 - pop out the articulating screen and I'm often shooting from the ground, camera held low; Olympus PEN with EVF attached - swing the EVF up, I'm looking down and go mostly unnoticed. Different opportunities are created and from that subset of the world comes different creative choices. We factor in the affordances of our kit and our we interface with the world around us. It's one of the reasons I'm likely to buy a Leica M - different process, different interface with the world, different thinking, new creative impetus. |

Get the MM and make me jealous! ;)
Honestly though, a B&W digicam just sounds awesome to me - I think it would do exactly as you've described.
