So, I was sifting through my images from 2012 trying to cull out some images I thought might work for the Art of 2012 challenge. When I had pared things down to six images I noticed something I thought odd. All of the candidates I selected were taken with with my iPhone. While I take quite a few pictures with my phone, the vast majority of my images are taken with my dSLR. So, why would the handful of images I thought were most artistic all be taken with my phone? Do I see the world differently when I am free from thinking about lens selection, ISO, WB, etc? Why can't I tap into that artistic side while looking through the viewfinder of my Canon?

It just wants to piss you off about how much you've spent for your gear! LOL!!!

Let me ask you this.....did you even have your 5D with you when you shot this marvelous image?

I have to honestly say I virtually never shoot anything with my phone 'cause I drag my camera with me everywhere.

I also pretty much only use my walkaround (28-300VR) lens, and I have my own tailored default setting so that what I have with me all the time is a big, heavy P&S that enables me to get THE shot whenever and wherever I am.

'Course, I may be all wet.......8~)

Possibly that says more about the nature of 'art' as opposed to the nature of the camera or the photographer. Voters will have their preconceived ideas about what constitutes 'art' in their minds, just as they have preconceived ideas about what fits any challenge. Possibly, shots that appear more low tech are perceived as being inherently more 'arty'? Those bright shiny images couldn't possibly be 'art' as we know it, could they? If it's not deep and meaningful and/or blurry and/or abstract, is it 'art'? What exactly elevates those shots to be more arty than the rest? The age old saying that 'you'll know it when you see it' applies here, I think. High tech or low tech, you'll know it when you see it!

At 800 pixels, there's NOTHING "lo tech" about an iphone 4s image... My entry in the challenge was taken with my sister's iphone when she was visiting... So much for my 10-grand worth of gear, LOL...

iPhone is a surprisingly capable camera.

This is NOT what my daughter's iphone photos look like LOL And I can't even text with my phone, much less take a picture.

Yep, no way does a pic from my iPhone look like that... says a lot about my photographic skill really, doesn't it?! Lol!

try taking a picture of moving subject in less than optimal conditions and you wont miss your 10 grand worth of gear.

Well sure, we both know that, BUT the damn phone still takes a hell of a pic, now doesn't it? Not everywhere and all the time, but so what?

i agree, but isn't that the point of buying all this gear, to minimize the not everywhere and not all the time?

i agree it can take a good pic, but people love their iphones, and thus over exaggerate its capabilities, my htc one x can take just as good a pic, hell it can even pull a still from a movie, but nobody is tooting its horn.

beware the apple machine.

Are we not always at our best when we are relaxed and unencumbered?
02/28/2013 10:12:59 PM · #13
They say the best camera is the one you have with you. Having your iPhone handy when those opportunities popped up may be the answer.

I think Ben makes a good point. With a camera around your neck your probably searching for something interesting to shoot. This process can get in the way. Because you don't consider your phone a serious camera you're just going about your normal business. If something grabs your attention and prompts you to take a picture it's probably something special.

Sure, but take your 10k worth of gear and try to get a DOF that extends from four inches out to infinity.

Bet you can't do it without the camera-phone. :)

I spent last week "getting to know" the camera on my phone. In forgiving light, and if nothing much is moving around, it takes some mighty fine little images. There's only one, wide focal length, and every image except one had white balance issues (I've never seen so much blue snow in my life), but with a little help in Lightroom, the fact that I didn't carry $10k worth of gear on a "work" trip wasn't really a problem.

Try to make a phone call from your Canon.

I like that you quoted "work"...

Remember, I do work for dementors. Although I'm transitioning to something new in March, so the soul sucking is stopping soon :-)

LOL, ok, sure - but admittedly that's about 25% of your 10k in gear.

By the way, I was marveling at this last night - that lens I'm using on the big-gun is fast enough to illuminate the GG at an extreme enough angle that I can basically put the 1/2 DOF right across the table that the beast is sitting, and on through to the wall, etc.

too much fun....

I was told there was a new lens available to enhance the iphone's range...$70.00. Soon we'll be schlepping iphone lenses and mini tripods.
