A friend pointed this out to me. He mentioned that the print version had this as well as online - on the print version it was front page with two more where the story finished inside.

I'm not surprised to see this processing style (textured old / aged photo) in general, but thought there were some photo journalism "rules" to abide by. ???

It is surprising to see that sort of style on a front page story i agree. I think the usual journalistic rules are lax here because it is pretty much just an editorial style portrait. Nothing wrong with messing around with them.

There's also the recent plague of photojournalists using iPhones and Instagram.

The editing might push things a bit far, but photojournalists have always used a lot of license in portraiture, especially in an editorial context. As an example, look at the portraits of the last several years of Time Magazine's Person of the Year. It isn't hard to look at the portraits and see clear editorial intent in the lighting and processing. Putin looks evil, and Zuckerberg looks like he's 12. And the difference between the 2 Obamas is striking.

edit: grammar

No need to say any more. This says it all. Now you could add sarcastic quotes around the last word, but that might come across as too mean.
