I just got my free annual credit report. In order to get it, there were a series of questions about my credit history that I needed to answer correctly. If I don't get them right, then no credit report....

Question 1:

"You may have gotten a car loan in February, 1999. What were the monthly payments on the loan?"

February of 1999 is 14 years ago! It took me 10 minutes to figure out what car it was. It was a car that I paid off within a month of getting the loan, so remembering which car it was didn't lead me any closer to knowing the amount of the payments. And, of course, I don't have records that go back that far.

Luckily, I guessed right. But puhleeze!

I think they must be required by law to give one free report per year. Of course they'd rather have you shell out some cash for it, so they make it a real pain in the arse. Stupidheads.

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are required to provide a free credit report every year at your request, and annualcreditreport.com is their joint site for that service. Just make sure you spell the domain name correctly. There are over a hundred sites with very similar domain names that direct people to other destinations.
