Blaming insufficient equipment isn't the answer as it isn't the problem. Light is light, you need to figure out what you have and to make it compelling.

also, instead of asking how much we hate an image, why not ask how we think you can make it better.

Thanks for your input. I have a lot of ways to make it better, I was trying to understand why the 24 people who gave it a 3 or below hated it so much. If the answer was 'we hate teddies on DPC' then that's a really useful lesson. If the answer was 'DNMC', that's another useful lesson. Making a better quality DMNC image for a Teddy-hating audience wouldn't have really added anything. But, it seems like teddies and DNMC weren't issues and I have taken the points on board for the future (and bought some lighting!).

Thanks for all the responses ;)

^This. All of these threads are some variant of "Why did my image get so many low votes?" Unless it's the rare image that scores an 8 or close to it, every image gets a number of low votes. There are always going to be some people that don't like your image and vote low. They aren't worth worrying about.

If you want to improve your overall average, you will do better by trying to get the vast majority of voters in the middle to vote higher. For this particular image, if half of the votes were 1 point higher, the score would have been 5.7 instead of 5.2. 2/3 of the increase would have come from people who originally voted in the 4-7 range. These are also the votes that are probably easiest to influence by improving execution of the original idea.

The idea for this image was good. A better execution would have paid off greatly, but not by improving the low votes.
