What do you think will do better for the rust challegne - something "pretty" that is rusty, where someone might think Rust isn't the main subject of the photo but the cute object; OR something that really isn't that pretty but is very, very rusty? I just can't decide which of the pictures I took would be best to enter for the challenge. Usually, I ask my husband which he likes best but he's away on a business trip and I need help!

I think I am probably taking the challenges much less literally than a lot of people. I would rather see a GOOD picture that does subtlely meet the challenge than one that is the epitome of the challenge, but an otherwise boring or poor shot. A lot of the proportion entries to me were simply a photo showing a dictionary definition of a word.

I think that the winners of the Rust challenge will:

(1) probably be iron oxide rust--so red (though I'll take the oxidation off an apple as rust--you know, when the apple turns brown?--yeah, that's rust; I love creativity like this).

(2) The images will probably have superb focus and depth of field,

(3) an interesting point of view (or a classic one), and

(4) excellent tonage and clarity.

(5) I hope to see a few with a human element. I just remember JJ's Tools challenge entry, which had the hands holding the loppers:

This kind of human element can really elevate a shot for me.

(6) Photos that do well will skillfully use other compositional tools such as leading lines, the rule of thirds, interesting color combinations.

(7) It will be cool to see if anyone could pull off a b/w shot for this challenge. That would be groovy.

Good luck, all! I'm really looking forward to this one. I love rusty things.

I took a hand held photo at ground level and was only able to achieve an f4 aperture. I retook the same subject from my lowest tripod height and got an f4.

It seems that superb focus and depth of field are the main measures here. I guess I am going to go with the f22 foto rather than the f4 although I personally like the f4 much better from the point of view of both meeting the challenge and eye appeal. I guess I need to find a way to stabilize my camera when shooting from ground level.

You could use a bean bag to rest the camera on, acutally I think rice bags are better. They are easy to make - just sew up a two rectangles of fabric and fill it with uncooked rice.

I still haven't decided which picture to enter for rust - I uploaded one just in case our power went out or something and I couldn't upload at the last minute but I'm not sure if I should leave that one or pick the other one.

I'm keeping it really simple. The trouble with that is there's going to be a multitude of shots with my subject. And we all know that voters get bored when they see the same subject shot after shot and tend to mark these lower.
