whoa!!! He was just on my deck, and there's a massive chunk out of his nose!! Pictures to come if he comes back! I just put food out to see if I could get him back, but I've got a different squirrel at the moment.
It almost looked like he had three eyes at first glance. |

That was me. I borrowed his nose for a mini-snowman I'm making. I'll bring it back next week. Promise. |

ok -- he hasn't come back, so I'll post the awful, fuzzy, moving away shots anyway, though it's the straight on that will be the most impressive.
This one is just, yeah, he's missing some. Doesn't really look like that much here
But this gives you a little more of a feel of how big it is that it shows up on a blurred, head moving shot:
I'm guessing he came in contact with a beak, but I don't know how he would have gotten away from that close of an encounter. Near miss?

Frost bite. Just like that guy (Dr. Beck Weathers) who climbed Mt. Everest in a blizzard and survived. Have you had a batch of extreme cold recently. |

The end of the nose is the cute part -- I'm not sure why you went for the middle.

We're Virginia. It doesn't get cold. :)
But isn't that amazing! Have you read Into Thin Air? Still can't believe that guy made it out alive. |

I certainly have. And Into the Wild as well, by the same author. |

Didn't care for into the wild as much. Maybe because the kid irritated me.

Definitely some of the leaders irritated me. But the history of the mountain and the story was interesting enough. Maybe I was just in a mood, and was reading it from a mom's point of view, but I kept getting irritated. Such a waste..

Hmm to me the bite or whatever it is looks more from the middle of the nose. Maybe had a scuffle with another squirrel and they took a chunk out of him. Doubt that any squirrel could survive an attack from a beak belonging to a bird strong enough to do that damage, and live.
As for both those books, yep read em both about a year ago. Idiotic expedition leaders in Into Thin Air, indeed. |

he wants to be able to stand out in the group shots you have planned. he's already marked as being your favorite subject, now you can easily find him in every other shot you take going forward
still, poor guy...

Into the Wild had a profound effect on me. After watching that movie, I no longer take the chance of consuming, or recommend anyone else consume, wild plants and fungi. One can live without food for a couple weeks, as long as one has water. But, eat something poisonous and it's hard to get to the hospital in time. We don't have poisonous snakes in the High Country, but we do have poisonous plants.
I will guess your squirrel may have been attacked by a domestic cat off leash. My second guess would be large owl caught the critter and flew off with him, only to lose talon grip and drop the squirrel to the ground from the treetops.

It could have been frost bite, as hahn23 stated. We have had temperatures as low as 17 deg. farenheit around the east coast. I just saw a cat that comes around my in-laws property this morning and her whole back end was raw and exposed... on the legs and such. So frost bite is a big possibility.
It could also have been caused by being caught in a trap, then escaping. Squirrels will often rub there faces raw when they get caught in squirrel traps.

Forgot about cats. Probably a cat or another squirrel. Though we do have owls
He never did come back, so I'm wondering if it was another squirrel. I had two squirrels show up, but not this guy.
I wouldn't think it would be frostbite, because usually that's tips of ears or ends of noses, tails, etc. This was pretty much the middle of the nose, and it definitely looked torn out.

I found Touching the Void to be a much more inspiring and harrowing tale of survival when things go wrong mountain climbing. |

Touching the Void was some sweet, suspenseful action! I wasn't sure they were going to make it even though they were there telling me the story! |
