Before I decide whether to get a canon 300d or nikon d70 I need some info to understand what's happening with lenses so here it is...

I know that Canon's EF lenses come as standard (DC motor and cheaper), USM (ultra speed motor) and also IS+USM (image stabalizer + USM) and then the most expensive L series lenses, so I know where I stand

How about the two 18-50 and 55-200mm Sigma lenses? Are they very bad cause they are so cheap? And what about the dreaded error 99?

And how about Nikon lenses, the D70 kit can come with an AF-S lense or AF-G lense what's the difference? Also have seen AF-D lenses. How does their lettering works? Do they have letters like USM, IS etc? What I am trying to say is, does canon have letters like IS, USM, DC etc and Nikon something like AF-S, AF-G, AF-E, AF-D etc? I need to make sense out of them. All I know is that the price is higher for them and not so vast range of them around (true?)

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks a lot guys. My eyes hurt from all the reading but... it makes sence now regarding lenses. Canon has some good quality lenses at reasonable prices so does Nikon but no idea how to compare them together (for expample Nikon do 28mm-200,mm for £99!!!) Must be some cheap lense?)
