Done, but a few answers I needed to pick more than one and they weren't available.
I use both hypens and spaces as separators, depending on the position.
Also, I have two different file trees...one is
Gallery - Captures
which is in folders first by year then date, as I entered into the survey. I keep edited files in there with the originals (same folder as done automatically by LR). But output files are exported to subdirectors like Web, Full-Size
But then photos I consider "masters" which are what I print and publish are placed in a separate tree called:
Gallery - Masters
which is organized by subject.

Also had issues as I don't rename but put folder in ccyy-mm-dd but thought I would throw in some details on a couple of points... First, I don't earn money from this and it would look very different if I did.
Backup's
* All my stuff is copied to a NAS(RAID5) nightly [lives in a different part of the house].
* NAS is deliberately RAID5 to handle 1 drive failure in place and R5 is IMO the best compromise between performance and cost of drives for a NAS - I would never use r5 for the prime data drive.
* Prime copies are on internal drives for the most recent and eSATA enclosure for the older stuff (windoze sees those as several different drives). They should probably be raid10 but I cannot justify that.
* That line is by year, so drives are set by year range (with some free space for sidecar file changes)
* In LR I have a published "smart" collection (barely more then dumb in LR but I digress) that has everything over 3 stars that is processed (I use colour to mean processed status) and that is copied to a drive as a DNG that is the source of my cloud storage backup thingi - eventually, the cloud has the DNG for the better images. Clouds are NOT the answer for real volume yet.
This sounds more complex then it is but I think it covers for a decent range of potential issues - FAR from everything that could go wrong granted.
Edit: I'll add this in but most of you guys are too young to care.... I still have a crap load of slides and negatives where it's impossible to be so good about dates [I'm lucky to pick a decade in some cases]. I keep an Analogue drive for these and use folder for format and neg/slide type... so Slides under one folder and within that kodachrome, agfa, pacific e.t.c. and I numbered each slide in pencil and use that as the first part of the name Sxxx_some_Description. For negs, same agin but the naming is Nxxx_Fxx_Some_Description (N is just a seq nbr I tacked onto each set of negs and Fxx is the frame nbr from the neg. As I said.... Move along here :-) I do wish that damn BUG in LR would get fixed... when you export from a slide, it ignores the metadata date and uses the windoze last change date - it should look at the metadata date field first and use it when populated as I went to the trouble of adding that when I could figure it out :-(

I have a boxload of slides/negs etc. The lab where I got my E6 and K14 processed into slides printed the dates on them...unfortunately, I usually got the film returned unmounted because I'd just have had to cut open the mounts anyway. |

Done, Had a hard time with a few questions, since the survey didn't really account for my style of organization. LOL I must be unique. I have different methods for different types of businesses. Maybe that should be the first question, "What is your primary use of your photographs: personal, clients, stock, etc.)" Then answer the questions accordingly.
If I was answering for personal:
I just leave them in the folder they came in (I can usually find the photo I am looking for by the date) when editing photos I don't change the number assigned to the photo but occasionally add text to the end like b&w separated with a space
If I was answering for clients:
I label the folder with the clients name, then save all photos to a new subfolder inside the original. Again I do not rename just add endings like b&w with a space
If I was answering for stock:
All unedited photos are saved in original folder they were placed in. I find them by date. Once edited they are placed in a separate folder that is numbered such as "stock 1-100" or "stock 2000-2100" Each edited photo is given a number according to the order they were edited. This way I can keep track of which ones I have submitted and which ones I have not. For instance this week I will be submitting 1234-1254. |

Mostly I just have a disorganized mess, is there a checkbox for that? |

Yup -- I'm having the same issues, Skip -- not knowing what to answer for 1-3. I don't rename my files, I leave them as they come from the camera, and I leave them organized as bridge/photoshop organizing them.
so the file is img_3501 and it's stored in the photo library in folders by date. Drove me crazy at first, but keywords or dates are the easiest ways to find things so after trying everything else, I went back to the old standard and let it take care of it for me.

I can't complete the survey based on the fact that I don't rename any files and the first three questions then don't have an answer I can give. I routinely shoot 100K images a year or more, and I have never "overwritten" a file number.
Keep the files named as my cameras are told to name them. One is MJO_XXXX the other is MOP_XXXX and the files stay in a folder that is downloaded with the date the images were shot. Never to leave that folder. Edited and saved images go into a folder called "edit" inside the original. Any done for a client of publication then go from the edit to a folder named based on event and date. But the files NEVER change names except to go from an NEF to a .jpg if I have shot raw.

first, THANKS! to everyone who has participated in any way, whether through posting, attempting the survey, or via pm. it is greatly appreciated!
[as an aside, there is an art to developing a survey, especially within the constraints of a free surveymonkey account, that i have not quite mastered. thanks for your patience and feedback! i have modified the survey to hopefully deal with the problems with the first attempt.]
even though it will take some time to consolidate all the feedback into a useful response, additional survey responses and discussion is welcome and encouraged!
if you haven't done so, or if you'd like to try it again, please take the survey.
ultimately, i hope to paint a useful picture of how most people organize themselves so that they can find "that photo of the fountain in Las Vegas, not the one with people in it, the one at night, you know, when we took that trip while the kids were still in middle school..."
thanks again for your help with this project!

done -- but the files in my catalog is a little misleading. It's 58,000 on this computer -- but I have 3 other hard drives with their own catalogs. Unfortunately, I don't have a single catalog. But I certainly have more than 58,000 total. :) |
