Like Wendy, I grew up in MN and went through many very cold winters. When I bought my first new car, a Mustang, it had a "head bolt heater" installed with a plug which stuck out of the front of the grill that I had to plug into the adapter on our front porch light using a long extension cord out to the street where my car was parked. The coldest I can remember was about -33F with a windchill of about -50F. Car started right up!

The hottest was 124F while driving through the Mojave desert when we first moved to CA and in a car with no air conditioning. Thought I'd die from the heat. We had to stop and wait for the sun to go down before continuing on to LA.

Probably because much of it evaporated almost immediately.

Instant snow from boiling water

Mary Ann, I feel for you! Hottest I've ever been was in California's Inland Valley was when the temperatures were in the 120° F range, where the car I was driving had an airconditioning malfunction, and I needed to turn on the HEATER to cool the engine enough to drive the heck out of there.

Coldest? Well, I did live in upstate New York for a long time. It gets chilly there too.

Yes, as I see you shivering under those blankets, I see your sympathetic smile.

:)

Coldest outside temperature ever experienced couple of weeks ago -33C in Harbin, China.

Coldest felt - in the days of Socialist Republic of Romania as a conscript in the barracks of the border patrol regiment. Constant -20C outside with scarce heating indoors where the temperature was a mere 8C.

Coldest that left a mark - during the 1989 Romanian "revolution" as a "patriotic guard" abandoned together with other 30 mates at the edge of Bucharest international airport runway in the winter blizzard. We were assigned as sentries to defend the airport against the "terrorists". Apparently nobody knew we were there. We were rescued in the morning by an army officer who noticed a bunch of green armed creatures almost frozen.

Coldest was -40F in Walden, CO. Hottest was 120F in Baker, CA. We tend to have a yearly streak of temperatures around -20 where I live, typically in December or January. Good way to find out the condition of your car battery :)
