Okay, so it's minus 28 outside today, and with the windchill, it's hovering around minus 40. I live in Alberta, Canada. Thought I'd share some fun facts about minus 40.

COLD

So, what's the coldest/warmest temp you've ever experienced and where was it?

For me, it was about 5 years ago in January. The temp reached minus 50. I couldn't drive my vehicle to work that day because it was becoming impossible to steer after being on the highway for 10 minutes. So I hobbled home and spent the day under a blanket looking through the window at the ice fog floating around outside.

Cold? I went out for a bike ride in shorts and a t-shirt last night. Was still nice out at 10 p.m. But don't worry, we have schizophrenic weather here in N. Texas. It will be cold again soon enough.

Snowy and cold here in Boulder. I actually needed a hat this morning.

-40? Holy crap, I could not live in that kind of weather. As Mike said, it will be in the mid 50's here today and mid 60's forecasted for tomorrow after a week and a half of temps in the 20's with windchills in the teens. That was brutally cold enough for me. We are only getting the two day reprieve before temps fall again though.

That's one hell of a heat wave.

Ohhhh, you're on imperial. Now I get it.
Interestingly enough, only the US, Liberia, and Myanmar haven't adopted the metric system in some official capacity.

a couple of days ago, it was highs in the 20s, tomorrow it will be 74. That's winter in Virginia.

As far as the coldest -- I grew up in Minnesota, we'd get in the -20s (below zero) at least once or twice each year (sometimes more often) with -60s for windchill, but I don't remember if I've ever hit the -30s.

I do remember it was around -22 below zero and -60 windchill when I had to go watch my husband play broomball. (boyfriend at that time). I had put it off all season, and it was the last game. He was out there playing in a sweatshirt because he was working hard enough. I was not that comfortable. :P

highs get in the 100teens around here, but the problem is the humidity. It sucks. You walk outside and the sweat just pours out. I prefer the drier summers of MN and the warmer winters of VA.

LOL! And you'll never convert us. Too many people wouldn't know how to dress for the weather. ;D

I wish the US would get off it's neo-Luddite ass and get with the metric system. It's a true pain. I shudder to think about how much time and effort is wasted converting between the two systems. That's not to mention losing $250M space probes...

The lab I used to run had a walk-in freezer capable of sustaining -70C though we usually kept it at -34C. I've been backpacking in -18C weather (-31C with windchill) and that was fun.

On the hot side, I was in Needles, CA once during the summer as a kid and it was 124F/52C. I had to help manually unload a trailer during the summer in Las Vegas. I measured the temperature inside at 151F/66C...

Coldest I ever experienced was -40C and it was in Montreal about 10 yrs ago. Brr.

However, I regularly experience between -20C and -25C here in Finland.

Coldest I remember is -25F when I was in college in Denver in the 80's. It stayed -25, day and night, for three weeks without reprieve. I lived off campus and didn't have a car, so I'm pretty sure I spent the entire three weeks standing at bus stops.

Then suddenly one day, it got to +25F, which felt crazy warm.

The hottest I've ever experienced was 122F, in Palm Springs.

we tried, but no one understood the dumb base 10 shit. we spent tons of money trying to convert, realized it was a failed effort and spent tons of money switching back.

us poor engineering students are forced to learn two systems. which sucks bcuase we cant buy the cheap international textbooks, we are forced to pay extra for the ones with dual units just so we can do homework.

Today's weather here in the swamp:
83F, clear, wind about 5-7 mph
Tonight:
Clear, low around 60F, wind less then 5 mph.
My friends and I will be playing music for two outdoor events Saturday, one a cancer benefit for a friend, the other a benefit for one of the local history museums.
It's good to live here.

-40°F = -40°C No conversion needed when it is exactly that temp.

In the winter of 2011, we experienced -33°F for a couple days at 8200 ft. above sea level. That was plenty cold.

Ever since then, we have been warmer and drier than normal. Too warm. Too dry. The first week of February is forecast to be +55°F and dry in Estes Park. The 20 degree above normal and drought-like conditions are a trend continuing from all of 2012. I avoid extrapolating this trend into next summer. Too scary.

I'm always reminded of this image when thinking about Imperial.

Whenever we do a press release we have to double all of the columns to add imperial for the idiots neighbors to the south.

it gets worse we have a conversion from a force (lb) to a mass (kg).

some things are sold in Liters (soda) and other in imperial measures (Milk)

we follow recipes in imperial units yet packages are labeled in metric (g and mg)

its amazing we made it to the moon first.

dont be jealous becuase we are smart enough to handle two units.

We're forced to handle two units, thanks to YOU. ;-P
And it's spelled "Litres".

not only do you need to know how to convert he units you need to convert the spelling too.

the hope is that all these immigrants will get all screwed up and just decide to leave, of course they cant read the units on the map on a cant figure out how to get home.

It's a scam.

Many years ago, I took Thermodynamics I and Thermodynamics II separated by about a year. In that time, the required text changed editions, requiring another $200 purchase. I soon discovered that the ONLY changes to the damn book were to convert all of the problems that were in SI units to Imperial and vice versa. I took the new one back, did the problems as written in the first book and converted at the end. My prof could not have cared less. The author and the publisher ripped off a lot of students that way.

It's -30 now (it's actually gotten colder, thought the sun might warm things up a bit) with windchill still -40.
I will bet the school buses did not run today.
I remember being a kid and waking up on a blizzardy morning and running to the radio to hear about school closures. Then the big cheer when they announced your school.

The hottest Ive seen was in Iraq.....I saw 140 degrees F

Coldest was -24F (-31C) in 1985 - Reagan's 2nd inauguration. With the wind chill, it was -68F (-55.5C). I had heard my parents talking about water freezing as it ran down the side of a bathtub, but I couldn't conceive of it, but that day I saw a friend spill a steaming hot cup of McDonald's coffee on the hood of his car - not a drop hit the ground - it froze between the top of the fender and the top of the wheel opening.

Hottest was driving across I-10 from LA to Pheonix in a car with a dark blue interior and no A/C. Weatherman in Phoenix said it had gotten above 110F (43C) in the desert that day. All I know for sure was we got into Phoenix after sunset, rolled down the windows and were enjoying the nice cool night breeze when we drove past a temperature sign that read 98F (36.6C).
