This is going to be too wide open probably, but anyone care to say what their suggestion would be for me when I am ready to move up from a Kodak 6440? It is a 4.0, 4X zoom, some manual controls, but limited and very much for an intermediate beginner. I'd love to hear the suggestions! Thanks! |

Hi Kylie
Can you tell us a little better what your needs and wants are? Maybe you can answer some of these questions:
1) What kind of photography are you interested in?
2) What is your budget? Both for initial purchase and for maintanance.
3) What are the most important features in a camera for you?
If you can answer those questions I'm sure we'll be able to make some reasonable suggestions.
Good Luck |

I most enjoy scenic skies, would love to have better night capability for those and city nights; macro nad interior shots; nature for lack of a better term, and everything else I am just discovering!! I guess that realistically, my next camera should still be under $500, maybe $600, by the time I think I am ready to make use of the options it would provide. I love ease of use, obviously -- great pictures, weight and portability (I know that a step up will invole a bulkier one; but I chose the Kodak/its class, for this reason to begin with); good viewfinder/screen; and probably many things I don't even know yet to want! Sorry I am so vague; just trying to get a feel for where I might want to go! And you are all so helpful! |

Go to a good camera store and check out the cameras there. A good store will spend time with you and let you handle/take shots with a variety of cameras. We do need to support these stores though otherwise they will dissappear soon with the internet and all. |

Hey Kylie!
If you are looking to get into a DSLR I would recommend the Digital Rebel as it is a lot less expensive than the 10D but has the same sensor although it is a lot lighter than the 10D which can be good or bad depending on personal tastes. Alternatively, if you want to stay around $500 I would go for the Canon Powershot G5. That camera is awesome and can be used in fully manual mode like a DSLR, but has a fixed lens. I highly recommend the 10D though if you dont mind spending the money. I bought a DSLR becuase I already had a Canon Elan IIE and wanted to be able to use my lenses. I am a big fan of Canon BTW. Pick my brain if you want!
Hope that helps |

Kylie,
I have several friends at work that have the Kodak 6490 and really like it. It is also 4.0MP but has a very nice 10X zoom lens and they are now starting to offer more and more accessories for it. It uses the easy share dock which you may like now and may miss if you use it with your current camera. I have seen some pretty amazing shots that have been taken with the 6490. It feels really good in the hand and is quite light also. You may want to check it out and consider it. I think it runs between $400-$500 including the easy share dock.
Having said that and although a bit more pricey, I love my EOS 300D. Or, you could check out the Nikon D70. (I didn't put these hear to start a 300D vs. D70 Discussion again, there are other posts taking care of that quite nicely) :-\
Good luck with your hunt

dSLRs are not for everybody. They represent a serious committment of time and money.
For night shooting, first off invest in a good tripod. :) For the point and shoot style cameras, I love the Canon Powershot series. The 'A' series was and excellent starting point for me. The G series cameras are a great middle step camera system. The end model A series and the G sereis all have full manual control.
Check out some of the review sites, and do your homework! Find a feature set that you want and look for that.
And don't forget the tripod!

Check out the S7000, a feature rich, fast, 6x optical zoom 6mp with full auto to full manual controls and it has a great body with a good menu and button layout. I have seen some amazing prices at the dpreview Fuji forum.

Hello, I would say I would up grade to a Sony 717...it's good starter camera to shoot macros and other shots. It has many features that what you may be wanting....However, it has a built in lens and can't interchange them from one lens to another. But, again, it would be a great starter and upgrade camera. Easy to use and fun...I have a Sony 717 with extra memory sticks (storage) and things..Real cheap 500 US or best offer, BUT you can not have my REBEL!!!! |

i second on the s7000, the successor to the s602z. you can pick up a 602z on ebay cheap now, but if you can afford it, the s7000 has a better sensore. the prints that come out of that are fantastic, and it has full manual controls, lots of features that are on higher priced slr's... the only downside of course being that you can't change the lense.

Check out the Minolta DiMage A1. It's 5mp and has about every feature you could want without going to the expense of DSLR and lenses. And it's price is dropping fast since the 8mp A2 has come out. It's not as easy to use as a simple point & shoot but mastering it will prepare you well for the bigger step to interchangable lenses. |
