have you ever needed to exchange a gift card? i have a $25 starbucks card, but i'd rather have a barnes & nobles card. i've been looking at online services, but haven't been able to find one that inspires confidence that i won't be ripped off.

anyone have any positive experiences?

I was given a Starbucks card and since it was Christmas I gave it to a homeless person... he quite liked and and I felt great.

Does that help?

that's a karma-driven option, and i'll go that route if i can't get my hands on a b&n card

Do these online services do a 1:1 exchange or is there usually a fee?

I have an Applebees and a Starbucks worth $25 each but what I really need is Bass Pro cards.

At $25, if I spend more then 5 minutes looking for alternatives, I've already wasted more than my time is worth.

with that kind of logic, you could have bought a handful of nikon d4's with the time you spend with dpc...

I think the take home message is that if any of us ever hangs out with Venser, drinks are on him.

Sure thing, as long as you're not drinking Westvleteren XII's, those add up fast. My watering hole sells them for $30/bottle.

Just throwing out ideas here, but can you just walk into a Starbucks and cash out the card?

I'll have to look it up. My favorite is dogfish head 120 ipa, at $20 a bottle. Luckily its hard to find and at 18% you aren't drinking many.

or walk into a Starbucks and ask anyone if they have another card to trade.

Sell it to someone at Starbucks for $20.00 and then go buy what you want at B&N. I'm sure any Starbucks fan would be happy to save $5.00.

"Regifting" is your friend. Surely you know SOMEBODY whom you regularly gift who also frequents Starbucks?

This is my second option as long as they don't expire.

"Fees and Expiration of Card Balances

Starbucks does not charge any fees for the issuance, activation or use of your Starbucks Card. Your Starbucks Card has no expiration date."

//www.starbucks.com/card/card-terms-and-conditions

I think in general it's no longer legal to have an expiry on gift cards.

It isn't in Ontario. I don't know about other provinces or the US.

...can't speak for the USA, but I can assure you that some in Canada do have expiry dates, and that some are right quick. I got one from a large retailer recently, (loyal customer apparently) and when I went to use it some 2 or 3 weeks later I found out it had expired.

That might have an impact on that loyal customer thing. :O)

Good luck at getting a six pack at your local LCBO.

There are others I rather like that are a bit cheaper. Mind you, after a few, who notices the quality anyways. :O)

my daughter is an sb-junkie and will take it in a heartbeat. giving it away is not a problem ;-)

the point of the post was to see if anyone had any positive experience with any online card exchanges. there are a number of them out there, mostly with mixed reviews that range from "i got my money or exchange card almost immediately" to "they are FRAUD and ripped me off".

there are a number of mechanisms for doing the exchange; some are all internet, involving eCodes that can be used at checkout, and some are physical, involving exchanging cards through the mail.

i was just hoping there was a reputable place that someone had experience with that i could pick up $20 or so bucks to use at b&n without it being a hassle...

Another option I just remembered. My local Safeway store lets you get cash for gift cards at the customer service booth.

I think you can safely say the answer to your question is no. And then remember that this is a forum where the opinions of the masses are freely put on display. Listening is not a requirement.

I have no experience exchanging gift cards, but my daughter does it all the time.

You can see some reviews here

These sites are part of a growing business sector and are legitimate companies, but they make a hefty profit on the exchange. On PlasticJungle.com, for example, if you sell a $50 gift card to Sports Authority, the site will pay you $37.50 in cash or send you a $39.38 gift card to Amazon.com. So you can pretty much trust that they won't steal your card, but they will keep a pretty high percentage of it.
