I've spent months in Italy for work, but..."Non parlo italiano!" is the only Italian I really know.

The funniest incident was on the tollway when I was driving the company car outside Torino, which had a transponder to pay the tolls. I got up to the gate and it didn't go up like it was supposed to. So I start waving the thing out the window as cars start backing up behind me. Eventually I see the drivers are honking and waving, while I'm having no luck with the gate. Pretty soon the speaker on the kiosk erupts in a voice speaking Italian very fast and urgently. I just kept saying "Non parlo italiano!" over and over until the gate eventually went up and I went on my way. I don't know what the malfunction was, but the transponder thing worked just fine on the way back a few days later. What saved me was the fact that the region I was in is close to France and a lot of people spoke French. My French is vastly superior to my Italian.
