Good Day everyone,

I just noticed that when I load my images into lightroom straight from my CF card, when the images first go into lightroom they look perfect, just like they did on my camera. But when I click on the "Develop" tab to start editing, the color changes and looks horrible, then I can't seem to edit the images that great because the colors are so bad... is there something I need to change? my cameras color space is set to Adobe 1998.... not sure what Lightroom is set to.. it's just the default that lightroom comes in.. i'm using lightroom 4.

I assume your using RAW? That initial image is the imbedded JPG inside the RAW file whereas the changed image is the processed RAW from the default setting you set for the import.

The issue is that Lr does not understand the adjustments that your camera makes, based on what settings you made in-camera. This is true for all proprietary RAW formats. So when the image first is shown, the preview will be based on the embedded JPEG, which was processed by the camera, and thus shows the camera settings. In the develop module, you are working with Lr's conversion of the RAW data, which is not based on the camera's settings.
If you want to mimic the camera's settings, there are Lr profiles out there for many cameras, or you can create your own and set it as the default for the camera, and they will be applied every time you import.

yes I am shooting RAW, so i take it this is just the way it is and this happens to everyone then? ... its unfortunate because it looks just like I want it to look when I first load it in but then once I develop it's horrible... and then I can't seem to get it back to how it looked before.

In the Develop Module, expand the Camera Calibration section and in the Profile drop-down select the profile setting that corresponds to what you shot with. When no other adjustments have been made yet, the image *should* look like the JPEG, at least pretty close. Keep in mind these are "reverse engineered" from camera output, not official profiles from the manufacturer.

Hi,

LR does not allow the modification of the color space, he uses ProPhotoRGB which is the larger one. If the photos do not match the ones you see on the camera screen, it's probably because you use some setting in the camera that LR can not know (such as Picture Control if you use a Nikon camera).
