Another "all or nothing" argument. We value life over fear and paranoia that repeatedly results in senseless death. Weaponizing citizens and posting guards at schools is the opposite of freedom, and there is no more inherent right to possess assault weapons and extended magazines than bazookas or RPGs.

Well, I'll leave you guys to your talking. It's been 45 posts since a pro-gun person has posted so I'm not sure about the continued conversation. But you guys seem to be having fun. |

I am in the freedom camp - and I think many people gave their lives to defend the freedom we have - it's a shame to give up a single bit of any of those freedoms to save a few lives.
Yet, if I were in the other camp I think I would say that every life is so precious that there is no cost too great. |
I guess the definition of "freedom" is different depending on who you ask. |

If these assaults had been carried out by people affiliated with terrorist groups, we'd be spending billions to stop it. But we're doing it to ourselves, and, well, we're a "free" people, right? So... |

yep the solution would have been more guns (on foreign lands) so why shouldn't it be the answer here at home too?

I don't particularly think those billions are well spent either. |

And this is why I say I'm anti "progress"
There is no answer - looking for one is a fools errand.
In the meantime, please say something nice to someone who looks like they need it today. Try to do something nice. Contribute to the well being of the world - it's honestly the only real hope. (yet, I'm not particularly hopeful) |

It's a fools errand to try to do something about controlling gun violence? Blame it on culture, society, all the while proclaiming a bullshit right to be heavily armed? One of the best articles I have read,

i didnt read the article so i'm not sure if this point was made, but it really feels like the focus is in the wrong place in the wake of this tragedy. so many are arguing for/against guns, isn't it the violence we should be addressing?
make mental health/children's services/resources for parents with troubled kids more readily available
someone said it earlier, study places where there are lots of guns but LESS VIOLENCE with them.
come TOGETHER for a solution instead of picking at an issue that tears us apart.

Why, when other countries with strict gun control proves this works? You never going to be able remove the violent element from man, but you sure can limit his ability for mass destruction. |

One major difference between Australia, Japan and the UK is they all have closed borders. |

One major difference between Australia, Japan and the UK is they all have closed borders. | What about Canada, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland? They don't. |

So here's the concluding paragraph for ya. The article's well worth a read.
Originally posted by New Yourker: On gun violence and how to end it, the facts are all in, the evidence is clear, the truth there for all who care to know it—indeed, a global consensus is in place, which, in disbelief and now in disgust, the planet waits for us to us to join. Those who fight against gun control, actively or passively, with a shrug of helplessness, are dooming more kids to horrible deaths and more parents to unspeakable grief just as surely as are those who fight against pediatric medicine or childhood vaccination. It’s really, and inarguably, just as simple as that. |

Not really:
"The Schengen Area comprises the territories of twenty-six European countries that have implemented the Schengen Agreement, signed in the town of Schengen, Luxembourg in 1985. The Schengen Area operates as a single international travel and immigration area with no border controls for people travelling between Schengen countries and only external border controls for those travelling in and out of the area."
The Schengen Area is basically all of Europe except the UK.... |

Don't get me wrong I am all for tighter gun control laws, I am just wondering how well it will work with our lax borders.
It is FAR too easy to purchase a firearm, hell as long as you don't have a criminal record you are good to go. Not to mention gun shows... |

True enough, but Canada has gun controls and it shares a common border with the USA, which unless I am very much mistaken, is the longest unprotected (for the most part) border in the world.
